'Retired' Diaz tells Fighters Only "I don't mind taking big-name fights"

Quote:
October 15th 2013

Nick Diaz spoke to Fighters Only at the weekend and revealed that his retirement isn’t necessarily permanent.

The former Strikeforce welterweight champion says that while he has almost had his fill of the fight game, he is in the market for big fights which would get a lot of interest and generate plenty of revenue.

What he’s not in line for is fights which would serve to build the opponent or which would have him facing mid-level opposition in a bid to get him back into title contention.

“Its kind of hard to retire from MMA, there’s always something to do. I am always going to be around it, like my brother is in training camp right now because he has a fight coming up so I am training with him,” he told us.

“I don’t mind taking fights if its a big fight that people are going to make a big deal out of. If not then its not really worth it to me.

“I’m not trying to do too much right now. I don’t know if I like the way the sport is turning into something different from when I got started. And I think its a good time for me to take it slow as well.”

Having fought from the age of 18 , sometimes as often as six times a year, Diaz is one fighter who has definitely earned a rest.

The Stockton, California native was in the game well before MMA was cool and he has watched with curiosity as the sport’s commercial side has grown.

Initially a fighter for personal reasons, Diaz has become increasingly fascinated by the commercial side, as he details in an extended interview for the upcoming print edition of Fighters Only Magazine.

Asked by Fighters Only if there was any truth to rumors he was fishing for a middleweight fight with Michael Bisping, Diaz said “I don’t have anyone specific in mind.”

Bisping today confirmed he would be interested if Diaz wanted a middleweight clash once Bisping’s eye injury is recovered. Stay tuned to Fighters Only for Bisping’s thoughts on that fight if it happens.

Ah whatever. You remind me of my co-workers in my old job when I asked for a promotion and made it clear I was quitting if I didn't get it. A lot of them didn't feel I'd earned what I was asking for but as a free man I have the right to name my price for lifting my ass up off the couch. If he doesn't get the big fights and is cool with just chilling and training in his spare time then that's his call. It's not like he's bitching about not getting the fights or anything.

Um, he has earned big name fights. You know why? Because he sells fights.

Get out of here with that. If you don't understand that then you are living in an alternate reality. Open your eyes.

Because Sonnen "earned" both his title shots ect ect...

Nick has done more to deserve big fights than 99% of the active roster so that dog wont hunt. Besides Bisping isnt exactly a big name fight.

Right, it's so out of line today to be enough of an mma fan where you want the actual winners of fights to be the guys who earn greater things over who ever is the most trendy story to be a follower of this week.

Who said it was out of line. I said if you don't understand that fighters who sell fights get big fights...then you are a lost cause and not in tune with reality.

Enough of an MMA fan? I don't know what that means. Wins and losses are for team sports. Making the best/most interesting fights possible is for combat sports. Fans like you seem to think MMA is supposed to be like a team sport.

If there were 40 Ben Askren's in the UFC all laying on fighters (winning fights of course) there would be no UFC....as it would go out of business.
