UFC: Johny Hendricks sustains 2nd degree burns during filming of UFC 167 promo

UFC welterweight number one contender, Johny Hendricks suffers second degree burns while filming UFC 167 promo commercial.

Filming commercials can be dangerous business, and from the most unlikely sources. During filming of the promotional commercial for UFC 167, Johny Hendricks incurred second degree burns to his back. The filming took place last month in Los Angeles and came as a result of the lighting being placed too close to his back, MMA Fighting reports.

Ted Ehrhardt, Hendricks' manager, stated that Johny tried to resume his training two days later, but was unable to because of the discomfort and pain he was experiencing. After a physician visit and a prescription of a healing ointment, he was able to return to training after a couple days, and was healed up in about a week.

The Mayo Clinic states the criteria for a 2nd degree burn:

2nd-degree burn
When the first layer of skin has been burned through and the second layer of skin (dermis) also is burned, the injury is called a second-degree burn.
•Blisters develop
•Skin takes on an intensely reddened, splotchy appearance
•There is severe pain and swelling.

If the second-degree burn is no larger than 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) in diameter, treat it as a minor burn. If the burned area is larger or if the burn is on the hands, feet, face, groin or buttocks, or over a major joint, treat it as a major burn and get medical help immediately.

Ehrhardt provided a photo and a quote:

"Johny never gets pissed off about anything," Ehrhardt said. "He was just mad that it was messing up his training, that's all."

The UFC issued an apology to Hendricks, who is still in disbelief that he even suffered the injury, saying that he never suffers sunburns during the summer months.

The title led me to think for a moment the fight was off. My brother-in-law is a photographer and has told similar stories from co-workers who deal with models etc. Basically they bake all day and don't realize it until later.

How did he not feel himself getting burned? I feel like it had to be pretty noticeable.

Will make predictions for credits. Please, I'm so broke.

Doesn't matter, he still knocks George out and takes that title home to Oklahoma.

The hot lights are on you for a significant amount of time. It kind of feels the same until the lights get turned off. Plus if it is anything like other UFC shoots they were spraying water on him as well which could have a cooling effect.

People are seriously underestimating Hendricks chances here. Similar to how they dismissed Weidman, who I knew was a nightmare matchup for Spider. Hendricks is a bad matchup for GSP. He hits harder than anyone GSP has faced in the UFC including Serra. The knockout can come at anytime. Also Hendricks is the most accomplished wrestler on paper GSP has ever fought. I think this fight ends early when Hendricks has all his power.

Hendricks can definitely pose problems. I'm not worried though. His wrestling credentials on paper are just that... On paper. They've been non existent in the octagon. Gsp has fought the best wrestlers in the division / Ufc and dominated them all. Not to mention Gsp's game plan will be there to deal with the big hit.

Gsp had got this. Hendricks really only has a punchers chance.

Hendricks will be ready for the takedowns and his resume on paper is one of the best you will see. Those numbers didn't get on that paper for no reason, the skills are there. Knowing that GSP relies very heavy on take downs to win fights, he will be ready himself. Don't be surprised when GSP has problems getting or keeping Johnny down. "Punchers chance" isn't really a good term for this fight IMO. That implies that he has to get lucky and land a heavy punch. He is very skilled with his power shots and the likelihood of him landing a big bomb is very good.
