Erick Silva calls out Demian Maia

Erick Silva calls out Demian Maia, offers him 'bad ground game' and 'terrible takedown defense'

Two talented fighters coming off a loss in Brazil. Does this fight make sense for either welterweight?

I guess making your own match-ups is all the rage these days.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight wunderkind Erick Silva -- who quickly became the promotion's prodigal son after coming up lame against Dong Hyun Kim earlier this month -- is looking to get back into the win column at the expense of another talented Brazilian.

Demian Maia.

"Indio" blasted out a tweet earlier today (translated by Guillermo Cruz) promising the jiu-jitsu master an easy fight. After all, how hard would it be for an Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) champion to submit a guy with a bad ground game and terrible takedown defense?

Quote:
Demian, what do you think of getting back to the wins vs. a guy with a bad ground game and terrible takedown defense like me?
Cue Admiral Ackbar: It's a trap!

Silva was stiffened by "Stun Gun" on the main card of UFC Fight Night 29 back on October 9 in Brazil (video). That's the same FOX Sports 1 event that saw Maia out-grappled by fellow former middleweight Jake Shields. The loss dropped him to 3-1 since moving to welterweight, whereas Silva stands at just 3-3 inside the Octagon.

Fun fight, but little reason for Maia to take it, since he holds wins over Kim and Jon Fitch, two fighters who were able to convincingly defeat Silva.

This potential match-up doin' anything for ya'?

Fan of Silva's.

Not sure what he is trying to do. Biting off more than he can chew perhaps. Seems desperate to prove he can beat a top guy. No need to rush it really. Isn't like he is at the end of his career.

How about Maia vs. Kos/Wood winner. And Silva vs. the loser?

Yes, he shouldn't rush at this moment. His UFC record can't reflect the hype he had when coming to the UFC. He looks great in the fights he wins, but apart from a minimal better pacing he hasn't shown any improvements in the holes of his games that were exposed. Better work first on those and try against beatable opponents first than risking his UFC workplace.

Erick shouldn't be calling anyone out right now, he needs to sort his head out and start fighting properly.

Erick (Brazilian Country) Silva is doing the smart thing, just keep picking fights with top ten guys if they cut you you can go ahead and be a star on the indie level and come back and get a free title shot (cough.Diaz.cough)

I didn't realize Maia beat those fighters til OP mentioned it. So yah it wouldn't really quite make sense for him to face Erick who is a dangerous opponent. He could have beat both Fitch and Dong. The lack of experience (pacing/conditioning) is what cost em.

His down fall was being dominated by high level grapplers, I'm not sure much would change unless he develops a guard like Condits where he is extremely dangerous off his back with violent attacks and wiggling around like a worm, Silva tends to ball up once taken down..

Silva should fight someone coming out of the Ebersole/Story fight

Maia should be fighting the loser of Lawler/MacDonald or Kos/Woodley (timings sake)

His pacing was slightly better in his last fight. His problem is that he constantly runs forward, trying to overwhlem his opponent. But that way, when he meets a wrestler/grappler who doesn't back down, he collides with his opponent, so when his initial strike misses he isn't in the right range anymore for following strikes, because he is too close and has to defend the opponent's TD attempts. That's what happened over and over again in the fights he lost. He really has to work on his range work.
