Junior dos Santos: Cain Velasquez didn't prove he's the better fighter

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2013/10/3...ghter-mma-news

Quote:
Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos has now lost to Cain Velasquez twice in a row, with the last one coming in the fifth round at UFC 166. JDS recently did an interview with Tatame where he discussed the bout and his opponent, and while he did compliment Velasquez on his game plan, he doesn't necessarily think that automatically makes Cain better than him. The interview is in Portuguese, and was translated by Android User at the UG:

On what went wrong in the fight:

It was a fight that, for sure, was heavily studied beforehand by both sides, my team as much as his. But I believe that in the end, his team brought a more effective strategy in order to fight just to win. My strategy was to impose my game and, as always, get the knockout. Perhaps it was a more emotional strategy than a rational one.
On what stopped him from getting the knockout:

What was missing for me was the distance to finish my combinations. His goal was accomplished, as every time he felt one of my punches, he clinched and leaned into me, allowing himself enough time to recover.
On his standing in the heavyweight division:

I still consider myself one of the main challengers to the title. He showed that he had an effective strategy to win the fight, looking to play it safe while not taking many chances to show he was the better fighter, blocking my punches in a way that is typical of wrestlers. He applied pressure, grabbing hold of me and avoiding the fight, making the fight boring, making the audience boo a lot. An effective strategy to win, but he didn't prove he was the better fighter.
The last part will undoubtedly lead to some debate. Did Cain make the fight boring with his clinching? Is that avoiding the fight? Is he the better fighter?

Yeah, ok.

Disappointing to hear from him. I didn't think Junior was one of those, "just cause you won, doesn't mean you won" guys.

He should go tell St. Louis they didn't actually lose the world series, they will be really relieved.

He's just playing the game. At first when he was an up and comer he was one of the most respectful fighters out there, but in hindsight, that's easy to do when you're winning. Now that's he's on the losing end, he's playing the game and trying to remain relevant by saying stupid things he himself probably doesn't even believe.

If those 2 absolute beatings he took from Cain didnt prove who the better fighter was then I have no idea what does.

The baseball playoffs have been random ever since they added the wildcard round. The best team doesn't usually win. The same can be said for basically every team sport outside of basketball.

Winning doesn't always mean you are better there is a lot of luck and randomness to sports. One on one sports are usually different but the complex nature of MMA actually lends itself to more randomness. He is claiming that Cain won because his strategy was better not that he is necessarily better which may or may not be true. Cain could both be the better fighter and have used the superior strategy.

Strategy is a skill as well and arguably the most important skill of every fighter.

The beating JDS took at the hands of Cain is clearly still affecting his judgement.

Hopefully one of these days the cobwebs will clear, he will watch the tape and then realize he can't remember half of it happening.

I am not a Cain or JDS fan, but as far as I am concerned Cain has proven that he is the better fighter out of the two.

I can sense his frustration. Anybody who's ever played sports or games understands that competitiveness. Their are players who are flashy, unorthodox, or very text book style. I wouldn't say Cain is any of them, but he employed an effective style to win. Unfortunately JDS' entire game was nullified so he has to look deep inside and understand that his outlook is not conducive to a winning mindset. He still feels he's the better fighter based on those remarks. He's the better striker, but if you lose twice it can't be justified unless it was fluky.

I think JDS will take it the fourth time around in two years. Simply because he will have a lot of time in his hands to study this.

For now he can vent out his frustrations on the next challenger.

Maximus: For the glory of the Empire, sire.
