I get annoyed with Lentz's constant guillotine choke attempts when he is taken down. Not at the fact that he's attempting a sub, that's great, but the fact that the way he has it, you know he's not going to get anywhere with it. It looks like he does it just to hold position and to avoid any punishment. It doesn't look like a sub attempt, it looks like a neutralizing attempt. When I was a teenager and had a crappy guard, in grappling matches I would do the same exact thing to avoid getting pummeled. Hold a guillotine that I knew wasn't effective due to the position until my opponent got bored. In that situation, I'm still scoring it for the guy on top. He's not in any trouble, the guy on the bottom is just holding on.
I'm not saying that's all that Lentz did, I could actually be way off base considering I watched the fight off and on while doing other stuff, but the parts I did watch, it reminded me of Lentz vs. Bocek. Every time Bocek took him down, he'd just hold onto a guillotine for dear life that wasn't even close to being effective. It just looks ameteurish to me and it makes me think he does that because he doesn't know what else to do. Like I said, I could be way off base, but I just hate when he does that. Specifically against Bocek, if not this fight. He lost that fight and never really went to plan b on the ground. He just avoided punishment with his "go to move" when being taken down. That cost him any chance of winning, and the thing is, it doesn't even look like he's trying to sink the choke in. He's just holding the position.
I wouldn't mind someone shedding some light on me in this fight. I hope he improved his guard somewhat like Jonny's friend implied.
