Diego Sanchez inks new eight-fight UFC contract, wants winning Joe Lauzon at UFC 171

Andrew Richardson-USA TODAY Spor
Diego Sanchez has signed a new eight-fight deal with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). And if Joe Lauzon defeats Mac Danzig this weekend at UFC on FOX 9, he wants to give him a run at UFC 171 in Dallas, Texas, next year.

Not only did Diego Sanchez earn "Fight of the Night" honors for his role in the Lightweight classic between himself and Gilbert Melendez at UFC 166, but according to a recent report from "UFC Tonight" earlier this evening, "The Dream" now has a new Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) eight-fight contract.

Sanchez also dished to the FOX Sports 1 program who he would like fight next and where he would like for the Lightweight bout to take place.

Following a recent social media war with Conor McGregor that made mixed martial arts (MMA) headlines, and culminated with a "Notorious" guarantee that the match would go down at 170 pounds once he recovers from knee surgery, many assumed Sanchez would continue to fan the flames.

Instead the 31-year-old hopes to fight a man in action this weekend at UFC on Fox 9, Joe Lauzon. That is, of course, if "J-Lau" is successful against Mac Danzig. And if that turns out to be the case in Sacramento, Calif., Sanchez hopes the two collide inside the Octagon at UFC 171, which goes down at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, on March 15, 2014.

That's a potential firefight if it does indeed come to fruition; however, one has to wonder from a health perspective if Sanchez has one of those left in him, much less eight, after the damage he has sustained in recent matches.

With the kind of head injury's he's taken and Im sure the kind he's willing to take, the good news is at some point he wont remember the beatings he took to be famous.

That could be a good fight.

That means he should pretty much finish his career inside the Octagon. I think he's become punch drunk with the FOTN awards. I don't blame em. Imagine if he had power...he'd be pretty unstoppable. He just keeps going.

One of the very few fighters who I've become to respect. He was an arrogant fighter when he first came onto the scene. Definitely changed for the better. Still fights the same though...hehe.

He deserves it a lot, fair play to him I hope its good $ for him.
I hate to think what Diegos is gona be like in 20 years though. A poster boy for why not to do MMA.

Very cool. 8 more opportunities to witness the madness that is Diego Sanchez.

Awesome that his hard work with the FOTN opportunities have paid off like this.

Diego is a true MMA warrior. I would still like to see the fight between him and Nate though.

You think we'll be able to tell?

8 fights for Sanchez well he's got the first four setup

Sanchez/Lauzon
Sanchez/Diaz
Sanchez/Melendez II
Sanchez/McGregor

I hope they Shogun him and gift him a title shot at Pettis, I think he matches up very well against Anthony and could beat him.

Oh God. I guess anyone with decent wrestling matches up well with Pettis. But Diego's wrestling is just that these days....average. He wouldn't be able to hold Pettis down at all. On the feet he would get brutalized by pin-point accuracy while he swings away like a goofball.

Sanchez is not a top 10 fighter. I don't want to see him gifted a title shot at all. He didn't even beat a washed up small Gomi.

My God. He would lose all 4 of those fights. If he wants McGregor he better fight him now before he gets a bunch better. Diego's last true win was in 2010 vs. Paulo freaking Thiago. He is the Leonard Garcia of the 155lb division.
