Rousey's former Judo coach posts how-to video for escaping Rowdys signature armbar

http://www.mmamania.com/2014/1/3/526...dy-armbar-mma?

Quote:
Ronda Rousey's former judo coach Jimmy Pedro joins her former team mate Travis Stevens in an instructional video detailing how to escape "Rowdy's" signature armbar.

When UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey was competing in judo, she was coached by four-time U.S. Olympian Jimmy Pedro and competed alongside two-time U.S. Olympian Travis Stevens.

Apparently, they didn't leave on good terms.

Not only were Pedro and Stevens rooting for Miesha Tate to win the UFC 168 co-main event against Rousey (see the highlights here) last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, but they subsequently released this tutorial on how to overcome "Rowdy's" signature move.

Take note, Ms. McMann.

It's certainly a different technique than the more common escape we've seen in mixed martial arts (MMA), which is the "hitchhiker" and rotation in, which has the defender get their hand rotated up so that the thumb is pointing toward the ceiling, allowing them to turn out.

Keep in mind my description of it is about as simplified and hacked together as it gets, but this video has none of that.

What's interesting to note is that not only is this a defense to the armbar, but it puts the defender in an advantageous position afterward. On other levels, it brings up an intriguing discussion on why her former teammate and coach dislike her enough to want to root for her opponent.

The original post over at Grapple Arts voices much the same questions and UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon has some answers:

I know Travis very well. He is not one to mince words and is no fan of Ronda. They lived together at the judo house at Jimmy Pedro's and I don't think Ronda left on the best of terms. I don't think he cares at all about her leaving judo or pursuing anything... I think it's all personal.
Hear Rousey's side of the story below:

Two sides to every story.

Still, it raises questions about former coaches and team mates sharing information after the fact. Does it violate some form of unwritten code? Or is all fair in love and war?
I didnt listen to Rondas side due to the video being 19 years long. If anybody knows where the relevant bit is, please post the time.

Anyway, bitchiness. My guess is somebody was shagging somebody and then shagging somebody else. So the original shag got pissed off. Which shag did the shagging of the other shag? Not sure. But shagging. Lots of it. With lube.

Problem for McMann is when her arm's getting shagged by Ronda, lube is not allowed.

lol yeah chances are there's humping involved. Rousey is a sour piece of work regardless. Oh the joys of women's MMA.

As for the armbar escape, I imagine it's far harder for women with less submission skills than these guys to pull it off during a cage fight in front of millions. Still, here's to hoping someone can escape it and proceed to flatten her.

This is a low low percentage counter, its also why judo coaches should stick to coaching judo and not MMA IMO. I mean, I didn't follow the link but if this is being put out as "the way to beat Ronda's armbar" then good luck with that and LOL.

A. No gi's in the cage = this is a low percentage counter in a mma fight against Ronda, add to that the fact that Ronda is waiting for you to counter with this, its not like you are going to catch her unaware with a common knowledge counter move. She would just make the adjustments she would need to make to counter you're counter.

B. This mindset is wrong, the best way to defend Ronda's armbar or any armbar is not to be placed in that position to beguine with, period, at this point you are already behind the 8 ball so to speak.

The other thing that is misleading is the skill level at which Ronda rolls is not the same as her opponents ....

This guy is saying he can teach you how to drive better than Dale Earnhart wile driving a VW bus.

Also this counter is too situational to be effective, Ronda's armbar's are much too diverse to rely on one counter move to beat her, I mean come on.

I trained under Jim Harrison and I am just regurgitating what he's taught me in class. Jim has been recognized as the top judo instructor in the country many times.

I bet the first fighter to not get armbarred by Rousey will still lose.

Tate almost got sankaku-jime'd when Ronda couldn't get the armbar immediately, so yeah.

And yeah, I totally used my junior judo knowledge there.

Just wait until a good kickboxer comes along. She'll eat a front kick to the face in the first 30 seconds, horrible standup.

I can think of exactly one person who can throw a good front kick and defend a takedown. And she outweighs Ronda by approximately 30 pounds.

When will this all transpire? When Ronda is 35 and they are using robots as fighters?

I haven't seen a real skilled/scary striker in WMMA yet. Or at least not in the UFC.

ALso, when is ROnda going to sit on the end of a front kick? What the hell? ROnda fights from distance? What is going to stop this mythical woman striker from getting bum rushed, clinched, and thrown? Are you also implying that this woman will be an elite kickboxer with power, while having great TDD?
