Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Roy Nelson targeted for UFC's return to Abu Dhabi

By MMAjunkie Staff January 30, 2014 10:15 am @MMAjunkie

A heavyweight bout between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (34-8-1 MMA, 5-4 UFC) and Roy Nelson (19-9 MMA, 6-5 UFC) is being targeted for the UFC’s upcoming return to Abu Dhabi.

“UFC Tonight” first reported the news on Wednesday. Although an exact date hasn’t been determined for the event, it could happen as soon as May, according to the report.

Nogueira, who’s been on the sidelines since a June loss to Fabricio Werdum, recently told MMAjunkie Radio he wants a fight with Nelson.

“If it’s [Nelson], I think it will be a good fight because the guy is tough,” Nogueira said. “(He’s) the kind of guy I like to fight.”

The UFC hasn’t been to the United Arab Emirates since UFC 112 in 2010, which included a championship doubleheader (and heavy criticism for then-middleweight champ Anderson Silva, who showboated and disengaged during much of his five-round headliner with challenger Demian Maia). The UFC has teased a potential return to Abu Dhabi in recent years, though such plans never materialized.

Nogueira has alternated between wins and losses during his seven fights since winning the UFC interim title in 2008. Limited to about a fight a year since then due to injuries, the 37-year-old would likely meet another fighter in a must-win situation in Nelson, who suffered decision losses to Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier in his two most recent outings.

I think Nog can beat him and has more skills than Roy. But not the matchup I was hoping for with Nog.

Roy is hard as hell to put away and has good BJJ skills. 1 right hand can put Nog out. Nog will have to use technique to land, clinch, take Roy down and work on him.

Don't they sort of have to go over there? SInce people that own a decent little portion of the company live there?

I am not. If Dana likes money, Abu Dhabi, UAE capital, is one destination not to overlook. Money flows in that region like sand storms and money erases bad memories like Anderson vs Maia.

Big Nog probably has a better ground game and he has more technical stand up, so this should be a favorable matchup for him, although.. He's actually not that fast so out pointing Roy on the feet all night won't be that easy considering how battle worn he is. If he can't get out of the way of Roy's heavy hands consistently, he could be in for a rough night.

He needs to turn this into a grappling match in my opinion to be safe. Only needs to use his technique standing to close the distance so he can get ahold of Roy. Who has the advantage in the clinch, though? Could Roy throw his weight around to handle himself there? It's not like Big Nog is that big.

Contrary to my avatar I'm not a massive Roy fan but he's got a pretty good chance to win. Yes Nog is more technical in both BJJ and striking but he isn't as tough as he use to be, and Roy is still tough as nails. If Nog stays on the outside and doesn't try to clinch with Roy with dirty boxing and cage work, Roy has a good chance of catching him and putting him away.

All that being said, I don't see Nog tko'ing Roy and I have a feeling a finish on the ground isn't likely, but believe Nog will out strike Roy and have better control on the ground and will win a unanimous decision. But I wouldn't mind seeing Roy get another Bugger King KO.

Nog has old man strength. He was out-working Werdum in clinch scenarios.

Heh, you got a point there. Old man strength can come in handy. I think he knows what he needs to do here.

This is a fight where I don't want to see either guy lose.
