Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra 2? Retired UFC nemeses trade words, agree to rematch on Twitter

By C.J. Tuttle  @kidceej on Feb 20 2014, 1:11a 40

Matt Hughes defeated Matt Serra via unanimous decision at UFC 98 back in 2009, supposedly putting to rest a rivalry that began when the polar opposites coached against each other during The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 in 2007. But, during a recent exchange on Twitter, both agreed to return to the Octagon if Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Let's get it on?

The social worlds of two retired former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight champions, and rivals, collided last evening when Matt Serra jokingly responded to a random question, revealing that he'd rather "hit" than "roll" with Matt Hughes.

Hughes responded literally minutes later, calling Serra, for all intents and purposes, fat. And from that quick Twitter exchange, a rematch was booked, pending the approval of company president Dana White.

If it wasn't for the headbutt that seriously rocked Hughes he would have dominated Serra the 1st time. I'd expect him to dominate Serra in a rematch.

Serra getting down to 170 would be a win in it's self.

I'd fancy him to beat Hughes if they were to fight now.

Can I ask why? I really don't see it. Hughes will always be the stronger man and better overall grappler.

Hughes Chin seemed to deteriate a lot in his last few fights, whereas Serra (from memory) just seemed to get a bit slower.

Hughes looked old when he retired, Serra didnt. Does that make sense?

The odds were good so I had to plunk down some money on a parlay bet with Serra. Thank you Serra for ruining my parlay bet. You fat bastard!

This fight would be pure entertainment. They need to make more of these! Why not? For nostalgic factor they should throw in some Don Frye vs Tank Abbott. They'd fight in a heart beat. Maybe a lil too outdated, but I'd definitely watch it for kicks. If it's sanctioned I really think there will be a possibility of a "legends" MMA league. A lot of old tymers can still bang if given the right opportunity.

Yeah I get what you are saying. Serra has the power and Hughes chin isn't what it was so I could see that happening. I just don't think it's very likely. Serra isn't known for his speed and that is what gave Hughes the most problems late in his career. If Serra couldn't land one on the chin I think Hughes would just out muscle Serra and keep dominate position for the majority of the fight. I know Penn turned out his lights but Hughes looked fine when he was putting Almedia to sleep.

The best part is when the fight has to take place at 205 because of Serra's waist size.

If I remember correctly, I had Serra winning their first fight. At least , it was a lot more competitive than what the fans seem to remember...

Outside of a headbutt almost knocking Hughes out I don't think the fight was all that close. It wasn't a blowout but Hughes remained in control.
