Keep or Cut Jake Shields?
Jake Shields is on a 75/75 contract so for each win he gets that's 150,000. Yushin Okami was a 42/42, Jon Fitch was at 66/66
Jake Shields record in the UFC is only 4-3-(1), 3 of those wins where split decisions, two of them controversial. He failed a drug test, never won a post fight bonus don't think he was even in the running for one.
Shields is also 5-2 against the current ranked group of WW's. His mainevent with GSP drew 800,000+ buys. He's clearly a top ten guy and a win over him propels guys into title contention (Ellenberger and Lombard). He is also a part of Dana's favorite camp as he doesn't seem to want to let any of those guys go...including Cody McKenzie.
He's always going to be in the title mix but does anyone want to actually see him fight for a title.
This fight was the last fight on Shields contract.
Three top ten Welterweights (Martin Kampmann, Carlos Condit, and Georges St. Pierre) are currently on the bench for a significant amount of time, with Nick Diaz possibly coming back.
SO the question is this, do you keep Jake Shields as he is one of the top WW's in the world in a division that has lost three of it's biggest names this year. Or do you cut him because he's boring, expensive and he mostly just wins split decisions.
