Keep or Cut Jake Shields?

Jake Shields is on a 75/75 contract so for each win he gets that's 150,000. Yushin Okami was a 42/42, Jon Fitch was at 66/66

Jake Shields record in the UFC is only 4-3-(1), 3 of those wins where split decisions, two of them controversial. He failed a drug test, never won a post fight bonus don't think he was even in the running for one.

Shields is also 5-2 against the current ranked group of WW's. His mainevent with GSP drew 800,000+ buys. He's clearly a top ten guy and a win over him propels guys into title contention (Ellenberger and Lombard). He is also a part of Dana's favorite camp as he doesn't seem to want to let any of those guys go...including Cody McKenzie.

He's always going to be in the title mix but does anyone want to actually see him fight for a title.

This fight was the last fight on Shields contract.

Three top ten Welterweights (Martin Kampmann, Carlos Condit, and Georges St. Pierre) are currently on the bench for a significant amount of time, with Nick Diaz possibly coming back.

SO the question is this, do you keep Jake Shields as he is one of the top WW's in the world in a division that has lost three of it's biggest names this year. Or do you cut him because he's boring, expensive and he mostly just wins split decisions.

If it was the last fight on his contract they should offer him like a 30/30 and let him walk if he doesn't take it. Martin and Maia both beat him; there wasn't any way to score those fights for him under MMA's judging criteria. The gross incompetence of judges doesn't make Shields a better fighter. He is a borderline top 20 welterweight if you are only using UFC fighters.

Lowball him, take it or leave it. Don't enjoy any of his fights.

Jake DOMINATED Maia. Only a biased boob would score that fight for Maia.

Jake is never going to fight for the UFC title again. But he also completely shut down both Woodley and Maia. I'd not cut him. Jake has it in him to be a solid gatekeeper. Now, whether he's happy with that is a different story.

Yeah he totally kicked Maia's ass standing, took him down repeatedly, passed guard, and took his back. Oh wait that is what Maia did to him and you are a crazy person reversing reality in your broken brain.

I say cut him but only because I want to see a true breeding ground for WW talent and that is something WSOF can really become with there current roster and I think Shields could add to that. I also would like to see Askren get a real challenge and Shields would by far be Askrens biggest challenge to date.

I do think that Shields will get another shot though because I think there was something injury wise going on before the Lombard fight as Shields looked off and unconfident during his entrance and for a guy who took on Dan Henderson, GSP and Mach Sakurai (back when he was a force to be reckoned with) I doubt he was intimidated by Lombard.

Keep him, it's handy to have his fights on cards in case I want to make something to eat or go grab food, or roll one up and go smoke it. With Jake's fights you know it's going 15 minutes so one's options are many.

Edit: He gets 75/75 and is lucky he's even .500 in the UFC and Fitch @ 66/66 with a record of what 10-3 gets cut? Yeah I see the logic.

Cutting Okami and Fitch were poor decisions IMO, keep him.

And that's why Maia spent the majority of the fight on bottom, unable to get anything off except for a few brief moments. Maia got outworked and lost the fight fair and square. Sorry that keeps you up at night
