Which is a bigger screw up. "Early" Stoppage or "Late" Stoppage

I was randomly thinking what the general consensus on this is. Il wait to comment because i am more interested in seeing other opinions.

To make it fair think of the same level screw up between a "early" and "late" stoppage as obviously slightly early stoppage is going to be better then a really late stoppage or vice versa.

Il post some gifs so you have something to look at and stir up those emotions.

Dont just think about the Fighters health but instead think about it overall for example think about the event, the viewer, the company, the fighters career, etc.

Late Stoppage

Early Stoppage

Alot of people think it was early... including in this forum.

Personally i think it was fair but not due to damage instead because Faber wasnt doing anything. He said that is how you protect yourself in that situation but he had plenty of time to do something else and didnt. Was he just going to stay in that spot taking the hits until the round ends because that is how you defend yourself??

To alot of viewers that isnt what is most important though. Early stoppages can completely ruin events since the fight might have went a different way if it wasn't for the early stoppage. And it seems more fighters would rather have a late stoppage then a early stoppage due to it potentially ruining their career.

Just throwing out some food for thought. Not particularly my opinion.

Went with the bloodlust option because it made me laugh. :D

Late stoppages are a lot worse, I'm actually surprised none of the people in the gifs died (although the second gif is as perfect a stoppage as can be imo, guy on the bottom was moving all the time and Herb stopped it as soon as he curled up).

I did not watch that fight myself as i was at work but that is Mike Pyle vs T.J. Waldburger and i have read ALLLOOOT of stuff regarding that stoppage being a horrible one. Literally every website that was talking about UFC 170 was talking about that fight being a bad stoppage and Rousey/Mcmann being a early stoppage due to Dean being careful since Pyle/T.J. was a bad stoppage.

I read tons of posts in this forum about it being a reallly late stoppage too.

But like i said i did not see the fight myself so i dont know i only posted it there because of all the posts i read about it when i got off work that day.

Late stoppage. There's usually an argument to defend an early stoppage like "He wasn't moving enough" or "He went limp for a second" stuff like that. There's no way to defend a late stoppage though. How do you defend anyone of the one's Sideways showed? You just can't. Weidman/Munoz is the worst one of all time imo. Thank god Rosenthal is in prison and not endangering lives anymore. I remember he reffed Big Foot/Velasquez as well.

Early is more than just a possible screwup of the fight result, it can also screwup the fighter's career. Let's say for example that they stopped the Overeem vs. Browne fight while Reem was unloading on him. Overeem gets the win, Browne gets knocked out of the top 10, and he loses all the bonuses, hype, and endorsements that he got for beating Overeem and Barnett.

Personally I think early stoppages are worse, unless we're talking about a really terrible late stoppage such as Carwin vs. Mir. It's very rare to see a stoppage that bad whereas there's many early stoppages which mess up fight results.

Eugh, that one is absolutely brutal to watch. Late stoppage is way worse. Sure, an early stoppage can ruin a fight somewhat, but a late one could end someones career, and ruin their health. That's way, way worse.

Late for sure.

A guy's well-being is nothing to **** around with. With early stoppages you can always get a rematch or redeem yourself in another match.

Late stoppage is worse because a fighters health is most important, however people need to look at an early stoppage more closely.

It doesn't just mess up a fight's outcome. It could potentially harm a fighters income and UFC career. When a referee stops a fight too early, he's potentially robbing a fighter of a win bonus, and for some lower level fighters, that win bonus could have really made a difference for them. Also throw in the fact that when you're a lower leveled guy, sometimes one or two strikes is all you need for the UFC to send you packing. So no, an early stoppage doesn't JUST potentially ruin a fight outcome, it can really mess up the progress of a guys career, and when they're fighting for their jobs on the prelims making 8k to show up, an unfair loss really sucks that much more for them. I'm not saying they should be making bank, that's not the argument here, but they do deserve a legit chance to prove themselves, and a referee stepping in too soon when they're clearly still in the fight must really suck in their minds. They may never get that huge opportunity again.

But yeah, late stoppage is still worse. Their life is more important than their salary, but it's not hard to see both sides of the argument in my opinion, even if you know one is clearly the right answer. I'm sure some of these fighters don't even see it that way. They'd rather risk it more to provide for their families.

Case by case basis. Some early stoppages aren't that bad, and some late stoppages aren't that bad. On the flip side, some early stoppages are awful and make you feel bad for the guy because he legitimately didn't get a chance, and some late stoppages are so bad you want the ref fired.

So, it just depends on the fight.

A late stoppage is only bad for the fighter, and he knows the risks he signed up for... therefore early stoppages are worse because not only is that bad for the fighter but also bad for the viewers.. everyone gets cheated.. the needs of the many outweight the needs of the few.

anyone saying otherwise is just trying to be PC

I am willing to bet though that early stoppages have caused more problems for fighters then a late stoppage caused a serious injury.

Hell i cant think of a case where the late stoppage actually caused the fighter to sustain a "injury" he would have not had had the fight been stopped few punches earlier or "vegetablized" as i read.

Yeah it has the potential to do so but i have yet to see it. But you are just as capable at sustaining those injuries without a late stoppage. So i do believe that fighters know what they signed up for and since they are the ones that step into the octagon i think their opinion as to what is worse counts more then ours tbh. And as previously pointed out... i have yet to see a fighter complain about a late stoppage.

I'm glad most of us picked late stoppage. Early stoppage sucks because it possibly robs the fighter of a chance to win after all the effort, time, money he put into getting ready for the fight and robs of fans of a possible great fight.

Late stoppage can potentially rob a fighter of his health and well being, end his career and alter the way he copes with life.

So i vote late stoppage.

Since we're on the topic of late stoppages, anyone ever see this one before? This has to be the worst one of all time. Damn near killed the man. Craziest part is the fight didn't even end by submission, it ended by TKO because his corner threw the towel in. The ref would have let it keep going otherwise.
