Of course. Typical business spread betting. The last games publisher I worked with used the same model: Instead of investing 1 million each on 10 big established franchises, you give 100k to 100 starving independent up and comers and tie them to long term contracts. A handful of those 100 will end up with a hugely popular product. Enough to cover and failures and them some. They found this method was *far* more profitable and productive in the long term.

Im not saying theres anything at all wrong with this. But, im certainly not going to read the article and think this is anything generous from these guys. It's all about profits.

I see where you are coming from but in MMA, the risks are much higher. How many camps have produced champions? Most camps don't pay for all the stuff his camp is claiming they pay. Most camps make you pay out of pocket to train and learn from them. So it's a huge risk the model they are taking for MMA.

Its not about producing champions. Its about producing profits. As long as your total pool of fighters is making more money then you are paying out to them, then its working. And clearly, that's what's happening right now with these guys when you pool Hendrix earnings with the rest.

The only reason we're hearing about it now is because they have a champion = a great advertising campaign for them. Makes for nice posters, with Johny standing there wearing gold and their logo at the top.

You guys this isn't the first time Hendricks has won and had a big payday. He already fought GSP once. I'm sure hes been making them money for a while now. There is no way its a lifetime arrangement if it is then He is dumb. I'm sure they have something worked out.

Interesting read, thanks for posting. I wonder how this is worked out. If it wasn't for them, Hendricks may not be where he is now. But at the same time, he doesn't want to pay them 50% of everything he makes. I bet he owes them a certain amount over time, and then going forward they'll collect a lower percentage of the money he makes once he passes a certain threshold.

As long as they are covering his training and expenses they will take the full 50%. Why would they drop the percentage and continue paying out full expenses. That would make zero sense at all.

What if he switched companies and found one that would take less of a percentage?

It's really confusing why everyone is just assuming these are nice guys... doing this out of the goodness of their hearts with very modest financial goals.

Give me a break; you don't invest $4 Fing Million into a group of fighters in hopes to only make a modest pay back.

This is a business arrangement. They will make as much money as they possibly can.

You say it would be dumb for Hendricks to sign a life time contract... it would, but then again, a young starving fighter might sign anything to help launch his dreams.

If Johny breaks the contract, they'll be just as happy to sue him and make their money that way too.

Both parties were fresh when they made this agreement. If they do have an actual contract I'm sure it could be torn apart in court if it ever came to that. One way of winning a case is racking up the other persons legal fees so high they can't afford to mess with you. The UFC would most certainly help Hendricks with that I'm sure. That would be an uphill battle for some little gym to mess with...
