Rousey vs. Carano: Why It Should Or Shouldn’t Happen

Quote:
One of the hottest topics in MMA right now is the idea of a fight between UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey and women’s MMA pioneer Gina Carano. It certainly is an intriguing idea considering the popularity of both women in the mainstream. However, there are those, mainly in the media, who believe that the match up makes absolutely no sense because of a variety of factors. While Dana White is doing his best to make it happen because of the fact that Rousey wants to make it happen, there are several legitimate reasons as to why it shouldn’t happen. It is certainly something to delve into detail about:

Why It Should Happen: Money Potential

Both women are on fire right now in some way or another. Carano has been making movies at least once a year and has been involved in several blockbuster films. Rousey has been on fire as well mainly owing to her controversy and drawing power. The attention surrounding both women is also by no means a result of their respective good looks and athletic bodies. Such a match would have the potential to possibly be the most highly bout UFC pay-per-view of all time if not in all actions sports.

Why It Shouldn’t Happen: Contenders

While Rousey has been clearing out the women’s bantamweight division of challengers, there are still a few who could potentially rise to challenge her. Cat Zingano will soon be returning to competition after a year dealing with injuries and personal tragedies. The UFC recently signed retired-boxer Holly Holm, who like Rousey is currently undefeated, but would like a warm up fight or two before entertaining the idea of facing the champion. Then there’s also the undefeated Bethe Correia who defeated Jessamyn Duke in April and will next be facing Rousey’s teammate Shayna Baszler. These women have been active whereas Carano has not.

Why It Should Happen: Historical Relevance

Another argument that could be made for the fight is the idea that it would be historic for women’s MMA and MMA in general. Gina Carano was the original face of women’s MMA as her good looks and fighting ability is what brought the sport to some mainstream attention while MMA was still struggling to be recognized as a legitimate sport. Rousey is the driving force that, according to Dana White. got him interested in bringing women into the UFC in the first place. Both women certainly had their part in bringing the sport from insignificant to the mainstream. For the two women to fight would be a dream match up in the history books.

Why It Shouldn’t Happen: Skill Differences

Back when Gina Carano first started off and was a mainstay in the sport, the quality of competition in women’s MMA was thin. There were basically Carano and the monster Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino (known back then as Santos) and anyone else was either undersized or not very skilled. Since then the sport has evolved significantly with a variety of women like Sara McMann, Meisha Tate, the above mentioned Zingano, and others who have come out more skilled and more powerful. This includes Rousey who in her recent match threw opponent Alexis Davis like a rag doll. If this fight does happen, Rousey will likely slaughter Carano quickly.

I think it makes sense long term, you listed three other contenders who are a combined 2-0 in the UFC. Rousey fighting Gina in December and then she can fight Zigano in 4-6 months and then Holms in another 4-6 months. Which gives the UFC a year to build up some other girls.

Also so Gina loses to Rousey you can still do Carano/Tate with the winner of that fight perhaps being in the mix for another title shot in 2016.

The other thing is you are setting the precedent with Carano that could maybe be used again with a Cyborg a year later. I'm sure Carano wants to avenge that loss to Cyborg with the drug allegations.

I'm comfortable with this fight but completely get why people are against it.

I don't know how others feel but I get the impression Gina Carano isn't here to get her career in MMA back on track, she is here because she was a fighter and is now a known actress and can use her acting fame to fight in high profile fights, comparable to Cung Le but even further along this path than he is IMO.

If my inkling is right then I presume she has no interest in fighting a bunch of mid-level fights like any other fighter would have to, maybe I'm taking liberties here but I also think after 5 years off and with WMMA improving ten-fold since then she could conceivably lose to even the lower level UFC women.

Put her in with Rousey, let her get arm-barred in the 1st and boost Ronda even further. To be honest I do not see what else could be done with Carano unless she commits to MMA full-time and plans to spend the next 5 years building an MMA career again she really doesn't have much use beyond the scenario above.

I couldn't care less if it happens or not because the women's divs are so shallow/weak that I couldn't possibly care less. Hell, IMO Rhonda is queen shit of turd mountain. (I feel bad saying that cuz it takes away from the other competitors, but hey, we've basically got a division where there's 1 "pro" and everyone else is amateur or less. And "pro" doesn't mean "elite", when all you have to compare yourself against is a buncha amateurs)

^agree, girls just haven't been training with the most skilled fighters in the world long enoug so we see a bunch of t-rex gimpy arm fighters in the women's division. I mean, the fight against Tate was embarrassing, Miesha practically handed Ronda the win, I could have lasted longer just by not fighting like a dumbass (get close to Ronda's hips and try to take her down, yeah real smart Miesha)

I don't complain often, but this annoys me.

1. Cat Zingano is crazy overdue a title shot.
2. Gina is coming off a loss and a ridiculously long delay.

It might be good for the "star power". I can attest to this cause tonight my dad watched Exependables 3, and I said "You know the girl from Haywire?". He replied "Yeah, the girl was brilliant in that". I said "Yeah, she's fighting the chick from Expendables next". (PS. My dad didnt know that was Rousey, and said she was brilliant before he knew, I retract my disses towards her in that other thread).

I get that it might be big for that reason. And I VERY rarely am unhappy with UFC over something. But in this case, I'm annoyed that someone who 100% doesn't deserve the shot, gets it.

I'm FN stoked for the fight. It's going to be a crazy war.
2 very skilled martial artist going to put on a great show.
Possibly fight of the year.

Now that they are both doing movies. It makes it more exciting. Who is the best action star

I think Gina wins.

I would love for this fight to happen but jeezus Gina needs a tune up fight before getting Rousey. That's my only complaint.
