This is a possible opponent for Shogun at his UFC debut. I think it has the makings to be an awesome fight. SHogun would most likely take it, but Machida is not ever a guy to count out. Wondering what everyone else thinks if they choose to go with this match up.

Man, Lyoto is popping up in all kinds of threads.

Anyways, Lyoto is extremely technical, meaning he doesn't make careless mistakes that throw him in front of wild punches, get him caught in nasty clinches, or get himself knee'd in the face. I think his style would frustrate Shogun, causing him to push harder. The only thing is, Lyoto will win a fight if you just fight him. But if you push him, which I think Shogun will, he gets freakin' dangerous. Franklin pushed him and got ktfo.

I think Shogun is extremely tough, but I think Lyoto would catch him with a few shots and slow him down. I see Lyoto winning by 3rd round TKO. Maybe I'm dreaming, who knows, but I'm not stuck on Shogun's nuts. =)

theres a thread like this before..with the same poll..

obcourse i'll pick Lyoto ..but his name should be written Ryoto "Lyoto" Machida..

Shogun is simply a better fighter than Lyoto. I dont think Shogun would blow through him easily but he has faught guys alot tougher than Machida. I think Lyoto is good but he gets way too much respect around here. He beat Rich and that is pretty much his only solid win. Barely beating a true LW in BJ doesnt qualify as a good win. I love BJ, but Shogun would give him a beating if they ever faught. I hope this is Shogun's first fight, it would be an explosive match :thumb02:

Shogun would win by GNP in the 2nd round but it would be a tough fight. The biggest problem Lyoto will have is that while Shogun's stand up is great it is weird he throws kicks from out of nowhere. Also the first time you fight a guy from Chute Boxe it's an adjustment since they don't do Muay Thai like everyone else.

Shogun wins by vicious knockout.
Even though I think Lyoto is a great fighter and very underappreciated by the UFC, I think I have to agree that shogun would win. If it goes to the ground Shogun has an advantage and with Shoguns aggresiveness, striking ability and a gas tank to go 5 rounds, i'd say Shogun would take this by a TKO or Submission

I think Shogun would take it, standing up no one has a big advantage so anything could happen while on the ground I think Shogun has a good advantage.

Actually Lyoto will have no problem with Shogun's useless kicks that never land good because Lyoto is a karate man he is used to dealing with crazy kicks...someone said it best when they said Lyoto would frustrate Shogun...Lyoto would win the standup pretty convincingly IMO by counter punching and avoiding Shogun's sloppy punches and crazy useless kicks and great clinch. On the ground Shogun will take it but he won't be able to put Lyoto away, even with soccer kicks and stomps he won't be able to. Lyoto is one of the smartest and most patient fighters there is. He would hold his own on the ground but lose convincingly.

So I see Shogun losing the standup convincingly and Lyoto losing the ground convincingly all the way to the end of the 3rd round where I have no clue who will win. Whoever is in their world the longest or does the most damage I guess.

O my bad I actually think Shogun will get destroyed in stand up but He defiantly won't get KO'd since he has fought guys with better stand up then Lyoto. I Think that Shogun showed in his last fight and the Arona fight that his punches in GNP are just ridclous. I just see Shogun getting him down and getting a TKO. If not I see Shogun passing into side control and pounding his ribs with knees to tire him out. and then GNP the crap out of him.

I love Shogun, but this is the worst possible matchup for him. His shitty punches would get countered quite easily, and I think Lyoto will have an answer for his kicks. Machida is quite good on the ground, so I don't really see Shogun doing much there. Both guys are good, and Shogun is definitely more established and has beaten legit fighter's, but Machida's style is a nightmare for Shogun.

A certain style is going to be needed to beat Lyoto.

This has been said before, but Lyoto will fight as hard as the guy he's fighting. One of the worst things Shogun could do is press the pace like he always does. Lyoto is just to good of a counter puncher and has delt with kicks his whole life.

I would give this to Machida, just on the fact that he's stand up is light years ahead of Shogun's and I don't think that Shogun will be able to get him down and keep him down.

Lyoto by 2rd TKO.

I would go all in for Lyoto on this one. Lyoto is an amazing, VERY UNDERRATED fighter. I think Lyoto will counterpunch his way to victory. He'd probably make Shogun bleed first and drain him out. That's what I'd guess.

I think another factor that could slow Shogun's effectiveness is where this fight took place. If they fought it in the UFC, there would be no soccer kicks or head stomps, which Shogun uses alot. Without these, I really don't see Shogun being all that dominant on the ground.

Damone developed what I said a bit better: Shogun throws wild punches and kicks, and Lyoto is a great counter puncher. The only thing for Lyoto is he'll fight a snail's pace if you let him. Another poster said it though: Lyoto will fight as hard as you fight him, so if Shogun turns it up, and so does Lyoto, I think Lyoto has the tools to win that clash.

You don't think he has fought anyone good?!
Not really, man. I don't count BJ Penn b/c that's not the weight BJ usually fights at. The other people he's beaten, I know people will disagree with me, but I don't think they're good.

Beating Shogun will force people to acknowledge Lyoto. I think Lyoto can do it =)

Does anyone else agree with me that this is probably the perfect matchup for Shoguns Debut. Make it happen UFC. With Shoguns Aggressiveness working into Lyotos style this fight would definetly turn into a fight of the year candidate I believe.
