Luke Rockhold vs. Lyoto Machida 'being discussed' for future UFC event

Quote:
UFC middleweight contenders Luke Rockhold (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Lyoto Machida (21-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) are apparently in talks for a future bout.

“UFC Tonight” host (and current UFC contender) Daniel Cormier today passed along word of the potential bout on the UFC’s official weekly news show.

A specific date hasn’t been finalized, but Cormier, who’s teammates with Rockhold, made the pitch for UFC on FOX 13, which takes place Dec. 13 at U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix. Currently, no fights – let alone a headliner – have been announced for the network-televised show.

Cormier also mentioned UFC 181, which takes place Dec. 6 in Las Vegas with a pay-per-view headliner between middleweight champ Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort, as a possibility. However, reporter Ariel Helwani later said it might also take place at a November event in Brazil.

“Luke Rockhold vs. Lyoto Machida – this fight is being discussed,” Cormier said. “Both guys want the fight. We know Lyoto asked for it earlier. Luke’s very open to fight. The fight is being discussed internally.”

Machida is ranked No. 5 and Rockhold is No. 6 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA middleweight rankings.

Machida, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, had won two straight (over Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi) following his move down to middleweight before a July loss to champ Chris Weidman. The 36-year-old Brazilian was competitive and earned a “Fight of the Night” bonus in the loss, but he fell short to the champ and failed to become a rare two-division UFC champ.

Despite coming off a defeat, he could now take on a fighter who’s coming off a win. Rockhold, a former Strikeforce 185-pound champion, suffered a knockout loss to Belfort in his UFC debut. Since then, though, the 29-year-old Californian has posted back-to-back stoppage wins over Costas Philippou and Tim Boetsch.

This fight makes no sense for Luke.

He'd be a shoe in if there was an injury... him and Vitor have a past... his next fight should really be Weidman or Vitor honestly.

Exactly. Let Rockhold take out Vitor, and feed Machida one of the MW wrestlers. Or Vitor Machida would work too.

Honestly... and this is just me dreaming but......

I'd love to see Cung Le smoke Bisping like he did Franklin and then....

How crazy would a Cung Le/Lyoto Machida fight be right now if they both brought it???

Oh man I'd love to see this.
