UFC 63: Matt Hughes vs BJ Penn
Saturday, September 23, 2006
Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim
I closed the other thread because that rematch will have to wait for another time, when George St. Pierre is healthy. In case you haven't heard, St. Pierre pull a groin muscle and will be replaced by BJ Penn, a man who has already beaten Hughes(which will almost certainly be brought up time and time again in this thread, even though it doesn't have to be). These are different circumstances and I believe, IMO that Matt Hughes will dominate BJ Penn. I know Hughes has lost to Penn as do most people on the boards so don't let that be your only arguement for why you think Penn will win again(that rhymes ). I for one believe in the Ground and Pound tactic and Hughes is a prime example of it. So with that being said let the Matt Hughes bashing begin.

i wanna know why you think this fight is going to be so dramatically different, im not sayin bj will def win, but if matt does win he isnt gonna put a beating on bj..matt was dominated in that first fight, in every aspect of mma..i think this is going to be a back and forth war..with bj winning by split decision 3 rounds to 2

I hope it goes at least 4 rounds, that way both fighters can take turn beating the crap out of each other but then I want Hughes to come out on top. I want Hughes to win.

this is the makings for a great match up, most of the time the challenger is the underdog by a lot, but this time its a rematch where the champion is the loser in the last fight. very cool

Good incentive for Hughes to win this fight, however if he loses to BJ he will say "its because i prepared for a different kind of fight with GSP", BJ is the fat kid in this fight but will find it harder this time round.

That's true we don't know what shape he will be in, he is on short notice of the fight. He just found out he was fighting Hughes like a week ago.

I always thoguht that was a lame excuss when there was a replacement.. a fighter should be ready to go regardless of his opponent is... fighters who use this excuse lose respect in my book.. if you train to fight you should be ready for all comers on any given night.. if your attacked on the street you have no idea what skill your attacker has so you always need to be ready.. fir fighters in the ring this is just a poor excuse to cover up not being prepared.. i'd love to see a fight night where the fighters show up and have no clue who thier oppoent is going to be until they step into the ring.. that would show you who the really good fighters are..

To me it is a lot easier to win in a streetfight than the octagon. In a streetfight all you have to do is kick them in the balls or break a couple of fingers, in other words fight dirty. You don't really have to be in that much of a shape to kick someones ass. But I will agree that is a lame excuss when fighters say they lost because they didn't have enough time to train or prepare.
