Joe Riggs Retains Zuffa Contract

UFC veteran Joe Riggs earned a first round, submission victory over Dan Chambers this past weekend at a Hardcore Championship Fighting event in Edmonton, Canada. The fight was no normal fight with a Zuffa contract going to the winner. Earlier this year we learned that the fight between Riggs and Chambers would have an interesting stipulation: The winner would receive (or keep) their contract with Zuffa and have the chance to fight for either the WEC or the UFC.

Riggs, who is still under contract with Zuffa, is likely to fight next in the WEC.Earlier this year Riggs was forced to withdraw from his WEC title fight for the vacant middleweight fight on the day of the fight due to a bulging disc in his back.

A very well-known MMA fighter, Riggs has a 26-9 MMA record across the heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, and welterweight classes. He currently fights as a middleweight. Although not seen in a Zuffa-owned cage this year Riggs has one of the more extensive UFC records out there. Riggs defeated Joe Doerksen in his UFC debut, lost to Ivan Salaverry, and then defeated Chris Lytle to earn a welterweight title shot against Matt Hughes at UFC 56. Hughes defeated Riggs by first round submission.Following the loss Riggs alternated wins and losses defeating Nick Diaz and Jason Von Flue and losses to Mike Swick and Diego Sanchez. After losing to Sanchez Riggs decided to move to the WEC.

Although he has yet to fight for Zuffa since he decided to move from the UFC to the WEC, Riggs is still considered a top contender in the middleweight division and could receive another shot at the middleweight title very soon.

Well, I hope he wins the WEC middleweight title. If he gets several more victories under his belt maybe we'll see him back in the UFC.

I hope he comes back to the UFC, seems to be a good guy and is a great fighter. He had a string of bad luck though.

I didn't like when Sanchez KOd him. I mean yeah I like Riggs a million times better than Sanchez but it looked like Diego completely disregarded the knee to a downed opponent rule.
