I have an ongoing argument with arguing with boxing purists regarding one of their many "issues" with MMA. They claim that due to the longevity of boxing it has evolved and developed to minimize the kind of fluke upsets that are so frequent in our beloved sport. They claim that the standing 8 count allows fights to be more of a war of attrition and skill which, in most cases, results in the more talented superior fighter winning. They often list off dozens of classic fights that would have ended differently if boxing didn't have a standing 8 count.
I'm on the fence with this. I would love to see the more deserving fighter, the more talented fighter with his hand raised at the end of the match but how could a standing 8 count work in MMA? Is there any other rule that you can think of that would help reduce these upsets that ultimately are bad for the sport? Do you think it's just fine the way it is?
The concept of a standing 8 count in MMA is insane!
If you get your clock rang hard enough to make you stop defending yourself long enough to make the ref jump in...YOU ARE FINISHED! SORRY!! If the fight would have gone on, you would have gotten injured/killed. NO WAY should you get a 2nd chance. Besides - these arent boxing gloves they are wearing! If you get knocked out, TKO'd etc, then you were not the best fighter that night. You may be better overall - but youve gotta win the fight to be considered the best.
Standing 8 count = the murder of MMA if it comes into effect.
I really don't even know how to answer this, because a standing 8 count in MMA would be so retarded... that this question doesn't even warrant an answer. They will keep it the way it is, and thats the way it should be.
I agree, but like I said it's bad for the sport. As a fan it's frustrating to see some bum land some one in a million hail-marry haymaker and beat a superior fighter.
One solution could be to have them wear heavier gloves. I don't know what would work but I think it's an embarrassment to the sport to have guys like Matt Serra wearing a belt.

There is no such thing as a lucky punch, just well timed ones. Theres no embarrassment in Serra having the belt either, hes a well accomplished fighter and he destroyed the ex-champion in GSP. The sport is fine as it is, the gloves, the rounds and their time limits, the octagon etc... Although I could use some knees/kicks to a downed opponent, I guess I'm going to have to get my fix from Pride DVDs.

but at the same time gloves arnt really meant to soften a blow of a punch....sure it takes the bone part out of the equation....but at the same time the force is still the same
gloves are meant to protect the fighters hands from getting broken or severly damaged....at least more so then to protect the head of the guy getting punched....i agree that rasing the weight and dexturity of a glove may alter the cut effects it has on someones face.....but ultimately ppl are still gonna get knocked the **** out
I disagree 100%. How is not having a standing 8 count bad for the sport? How is having "upsets" bad for the sport? I think not knowing who is going to win before a fight is great. I think the fact that a win can come out of nowhere at any given moment is great. MMA is great because it is multi-faceted and you never really get a "breather" like in boxing with the standing 8 count. You have to be on your toes, protect yourself, and fight back at all times, even when you've been knocked senseless.

No standing 8 count in MMA, that would ruin it. Then the fights would be the "classic" 15 boring, non eventful rounds boxing fans are used to seeing. That's why MMA is not only a sport, but it's a true FIGHT!! Just like any true fight, on any given day, anyone can win. Imagine how boring MMA would be if the best fighters ALWAYS won?? Then it would be as boring as, uh I don't know.....BOXING perhaps?? :thumb02:
Actually, I am a huuuuge fan of the grappling and so are alot of people, it makes MMA what it is. If you don't want to watch grappling, watch Boxing :sarcastic03: .

Speaking from personal knowledge, you would feel a difference... And why the hell else would boxing matches go so long if there wasn't a difference. As a previous poster stated, MMA gloves are solely to protect your knuckles/hand from breaking.
Calm down, I dont want to start that argument. Grappling has it's place...I would never want to see it completely eliminated but to say grappling is better than striking is laughable. If the UFC had to remove one or the other and chose to get rid of striking they would be out of business in a year. Nobody would pay to watch a couple of dudes roll around with each other for 15 minutes. Well, most people wouldn't, I'm sure there's a select few who would love it.

No actually I would rather watch great grapplers then sub par stand up. Nogueira vs Shogun is perhaps the greatest fight in MMA history and the grappling was fun and exicting. I think you want to watch Kickboxing with 4 oz gloves because that seems to be what you are describing. Grappling is what makes MMA what it is. Most of the most exicting fighters in MMA are grapplers. Penn, Shogun, Aoki, Sanchez, Fedor. all grapplers and all extremly exiciting.
huh no? Im sure most would not? And for the bigger gloves, it doesnt take away only the grappling aspect, it also takes away striking.
Bigger gloves = better protection, less opportunity to strike precisely. That's one of the main reasons Boxers will never be successful in MMA, unless they relearn how to strike barehanded.
And you didnt answer how the hell a 8 count would work in MMA. Just watch K-1 if you dont want to see grappling.
