Brandon Vera Will Fight Tim Sylvia [Aug 16, 2007]
Chad Edward
On a UFC 74 conference call, UFC President Dana White confirmed Brandon Vera will return before the end of 2007 and his opponent will be former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia.

Brandon Vera last fought at UFC 65 November 18, 2006, beating former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir by TKO in the first round.

Just a month later, Vera attended the inaugural press conference of promoter Gary Shaw's EliteXC MMA promotion. At the time, Vera had just one fight left on his UFC contract and told the press his future was with "whoever wants to take care of me the best."

After that ExliteXC appearance and subsequent layoff from competition, rumors swirled that Vera was being punished by Dana White. Thursday (August 16th), White told the media that wasn't true. White said Vera's layoff was caused by Vera's management change.

Indeed, Brandon Vera is no longer managed by Mark Dion, nor does he train at City Boxing in San Diego, California, Dion's gym. Vera is starting a new gym in San Diego called Alliance MMA (www.alliancemma.com).

White also confirmed that Vera has signed a new contract with the UFC, but couldn't recall how many fights are included. White also couldn't confirm the date of Vera's return to the Octagon to fight Tim Syvlia.

Tim Syliva last fought at UFC 68 March 3, 2007, losing his UFC Heavyweight Title to Randy Couture.
hmm Tim sylvia is coming off a loss, I would have perferred Vera and Arlovski but oh well

i give it to silvia, let the flaming begin. lol
I agree on that one. It's a fight that people have wanted to see when Sylvia was champ and I guess it's finally gonna happen. I just think Sylvia is gonna win this one.

I hope Sylvia beats him. I really dont mind Sylvia.... i think people are a little too hard on him, as long as he isnt champ then i will root for him most of the time.

I think Vera is a little bit too cocky, hes buying into his own hype a little too much, it will probably cost him.

Yeah, when Tim has the belt he just fights not to lose instead of finishing the fight and then everyone calls him a crappy fighter. If he wass a crappy fighter he wouldn't have held the belt and his three losses aren't anything to be ashamed of. One to Randy, Arlovski, and Mir when he was prime back then.

Vera is way to cocky I think. He really hasn't beat anyone in the UFC to think that he could take Liddell or another top fighter.

Actually, I also think Tim has a very good chance, if he shows up as the killer Tim who KO'd AA, Telligman, Ricco, McGee and Cabbage, and not the half-assed sore-back Tim who got mauled by Randy. Vera is giving up reach and weight and won't be able to manhandle him in the clinch or submit him at will.
I like Vera, but Tim seems like a bad matchup for him.

Believe it or not this matchup might turn out to be the fight of the night. It's a great matchup since both fighters have something to prove. We might see the "old" Tim Sylvia the one that knocks out people and for Vera this fight could re-ignite his "stalled" career and he wants to prove he belongs near the top of the HW division.

Dont love either fighter but can see it being a potentially explosive fight! Hopefully they both throw a knock-out punch at the same time and both go down, like in Rocky II

See I'd prefer to see a changing of the guard and this hyped Brandon Vera strut right on through Sylvia just so I can start beleiving his hype but I think he's going to have a hard time with Sylvia.

He's going to want to stand cause that's what Vera doess. He's going to have to get that clinch in and use the knees if Sylvia isn't to powerful.

I think I might take Sylvia by UD, but I think I'm gonna watch Veras fights some more.

well i think its a good fight. In my mind Vera is kinda in the twilight zone in reganrds to how good he is. YES he has an perfect mma record but the only contender he has fought was Mir and we have all seen upsets like that before ( napau - crocop anoyone ? ). If he beats Sylvia then hes the real deal and would be a supercontender and may be Fedors first fight in the UFC :thumb02:

you and me both. despite his last two lackluster showings, i still really like arlovski and would love to see him fight again. But according to vera he's claiming that the LHW and HW belts will be his in the near future... sounds like this is the first stop on the way to that goal. Good place to start if you ask me.

Man I'm glad to see a lot of fans backing Sylvia on this one. IMO Vera's gotta lotta hype to prove fighting a guy like Sylvia. Sylvia's a step up from any of the fighers Vera's taken out. Not to call Scherner, Assuerio, or Mir cans (maybe Scherner). Mir just wasn't as cool as everyone was thinking he was gonne be on his comeback road, and Assuerio got kicked in the nuts and retardedly fought Vera on Emotion and got his ass caught in a guillotine he had pretty much asked for.

Sylvia's was really impressive fighting Cabbage's hard head for his debut, and has faced guys like Gan, Sims, Arlovski, Ricco, Telligman, Monson, and went 5 rounds with the big man Randy Couture. He's got credentials that Vera doesn't have and I refuse to jump on Vera's bandwagon unless he destroys Syliva.

Old Sylvia to the rescue!

gotta respect Tim for this

UFC isnt feeding him a B level fighter like they do with their other poster boys.
Well I would hardly call Tim a poster boy for the UFC but I agree with you. It takes some balls to come off of a big loss and fight a guy as tough as Vera.

I think Vera is the much more skilled fighter but I just wonder how he will deal with Sylvia's size and strength.

Good to see Vera take on a top Heavyweight, now we'll see what he's really got. Both men are going to go out there with something to prove so it should make for a very good fight.
maybe tim will actually fight in this match up & maybe vera will finally prove his worth against a proven fighter.

maybe's people, maybe's.
