UFC lightweight Jorge Gurgel (11-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will take on Alvin Robinson (8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 77. UFCjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, MMA news, UFC rumors, UFC gossip, fighter interviews and event previews and recaps - UFCjunkie.com) confirmed the news with Gurgel’s management earlier today.
Gurgel suffered a broken jaw in a unanimous decision victory over Diego Saraiva via at UFC 73 but was cleared by doctors for the Oct. 20 event, which takes place at U.S. Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati. Gurgel runs one of the sport’s top training centers just north of the Queen City.
Prior to the victory over Saraiva, Gurgel dropped a unanimous decision to Mark Hominick at UFC Fight Night 5. He rebounded three months later for a unanimous-decision victory over Danny Abbadi at UFC 63.
Robinson, a veteran of the Colorado-based Ring of Fire organization, made his Octagon debut at UFC 73 and suffered a first-round submission (via strikes) to Kenny Florian.
Gurgel was originally set to face Alaskan Fighting Championships’ Doug Evans, but the fighter had to decline the UFC 77 fight because of an injury. Evans made his UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale and made a solid — but unsuccessful — showing against Roger Huerta, ultimately suffering a second-round TKO from strikes.
Gurgel’s training partner, Rich Franklin, takes on current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in UFC 77’s main event.
