Jake Shields ordered to do community service for throwing punch after bout

LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada State Athletic Commission has ordered WSOF welterweight Jake Shields to do 50 hours of community service for throwing a late punch following his championship bout against Rousimar Palhares on Aug. 1.

Shields, 36, appeared before the NSAC for a disciplinary hearing Monday. He threw the punch after Palhares refused to release a kimura hold that ended the fight in the third round. Palhares is facing disciplinary action for his failure to release the submission.

During the hearing, Shields (31-8-1) admitted he was frustrated after Palhares continued to crank his arm well after he had tapped. He also pointed out Palhares' checkered past of not releasing submissions. The UFC cut Palhares in 2013 after several similar instances. He was suspended in 2010 by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board for holding a submission too long.

Additionally, Shields complained that Palhares repeatedly "took his thumbs and gouged my eyes over and over." Shields testified he couldn't see by the third round.

Shields avoided any financial penalty, although he was ordered to reimburse the NSAC for any fees it incurred from Monday's hearing. Shields' disclosed purse for the Aug. 1 contest was $35,000. He said he already had been affected financially, as he was "winning the fight until the eye gouges" and therefore missed out on a potential win bonus.

He also said he continues to suffer from a shoulder injury related to Palhares' submission.

Shields must complete the community service within six months. Palhares' disciplinary hearing is expected to take place in October.

Summary: Jake Shields will do 50 hours of community service for the late punch on Palhares.

Reimburse them of the hearing? Isn't it THEIR hearing?

Palhares should be forced to pay Those fees for Jake and do 250 hrs of community service and be banned for 5 years like Diaz. Dude is an asshole.

^Palhares has his own fish to fry. Whether or not Jake Shields was "justified" to take a swing at him after the fight is the issue. By most standards, he wasn't, but we can all understand it.
