I think Gus will have learned from his losses, calmed down a bit and has what it takes to put a great win streak together, starting with DC.
DC had to rush in on Jones and was getting tagged in the process, Gus has the same range, moves better and hits a lot harder than Jones does, just needs to respect opponent's power, that chin won't take the hit unfazed every time.
I think Gus' movement and striking will just wear DC down and eventually finish him, but DC is surprisingly fast early on and if he can get a takedown, he needs to make the most of it.
Was rooting for DC vs Jones [actually thought he'd give Jones a very good run for his money, but ended up having to give props to Jones after that fight, even if he was his usually c*nty self at the post fight presser], but since then, don't really care for the guy - way too smug for my tastes [of course it takes an insane kind of determination, confidence, what have you, in order to overcome the death of your daughter, compete in the Olympics, and become championship material in the UFC] etc but he rubs me the wrong way, way too much]. Even when he tried that 'smart' trash-talk thing with Gus at the Go Big presser - it came out so sh*tty [the whole "please, let's talk about one of Alexander's 'earth shattering' wins"] and the guy just came off as a c*nt imo.
He's an amazing fighter, and I wish him all the best, but at this point much more interested in a JBJ/Gus rematch. I'd definitely watch DC have another crack at Bones too, but don't think it would be significantly different.
Anyway, usually, if DC gets his hands on you, he takes you down & you stay down; or you get ground against the fence the whole fight.
I'm hoping Gus took his takedown defence to the next level and maximises on his movement/footwork and knocks DC out :thumb02:
I'm trying but sure why I can't get excited at all for this card. It is a very solid card on paper.
These are top guys, but something feels missing knowing neither is the real champ at 205 and both actually lost to him very recently. Gus dropping another fight, his last fight.
I think this can be a good fight if Gus shows up. I can just see the Woodley and Rashad fights for or sucking.
Someone get me excited here. Seems the forum is a little meh about this as well.
The UFC organization is aware that Jon Jones reached a plea agreement with authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico this morning stemming from charges associated with a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. As a result, UFC, through Las Vegas-based law firm Campbell & Williams, will thoroughly review the agreement before discussing Jones’ possible reinstatement to return to competition.
It's not Gus or DC's fault that Jones is out indefinitely, I don't like the fact a fighter gets a shot coming off a loss...but the guy Gus lost to lost to DC in his next fight, and I think the UFC(Dana) secretly feels they owe Gus a shot because of his 'loss' to Jones.
I am not calling this fight. It could go either way but I hope Gus wins.
Gus need to become a better poker player. His aggression is a bit inconsistent at times and he attacks when he should just defend and defend when he should just attack.
In all his losses one could question whether over aggression or cautiousness played a role in it. Let me bring some examples.
- In his submission loss vs Davis Gus started very well but tried to wrestle when it was clear Davis had no good striking and Gus could just pick him apart.
- In Gus point loss vs Jones, Gus had Jones cut but did not try to pressure Jones too much until the 4th round.
- In Gus K.O loss vs Anthony Johnson Gustafsson gets caught when he stops dancing around. In this fight he should have been dancing around more because contrary to Jones, Anthony Johnson is such a powerful striker with bad cardio.
- Furthermore in some of Gus wins like against Shogun and Thiago Silva here Gus dances around even when he land big strikes. Here he does not try to win by knockout when instead it is what he should have done.
I feel like in this fight, Gus needs to make sure he can get through 3 rounds without grappling. He shouldn't even kick. Just land jabs and then run for the hills. Condit Vs Diaz style. If DC gets a hold of him, I see the rest of the round either being a grappling match or at the very least a huge slam from DC which takes the round on the spot.
Gus can win it but it's always hard against a guy built the way DC is.
I am rooting for Gus, even though I don't completely deslike Cormier. I think DC is artificially attempting to talk too much sh!t recently with the sole purpose of raising his stacks, and as usual, this annoys the hell out of me.
Anyway, I hope Gus finds a way, but I can't see how he doesn't lose this fight and possibly in devastating, embarrassing and career rethinking fashion. I pretty much think DC ragdolls him.
I expect a DC win, but hope Gus can find a way. Haven't decided if I'll play the DC by dec betting prop, but I don't see a likelier option out there when I play this matchup in my head.
DC just feels more experientially (did i make that word up?) polished. He's got more miles with all the wrestling on him and in this one I think there' a lot of him putting his weight on Alex.
I hope I get completely shocked and see a Gus victory, but the odds are on DC to smash him for a reason.
All that being said, I played a Hall by finish vs Mousasi and his 44 fight career without a ko loss last weekend at +900 and was pleasantly surprised. One of the most satisfying combat sports victories I've ever enjoyed. So crazy shit can happen in MMA. Let's hope a hungry, and confident Gus takes to the octagon in a couple nights.
Did people forget out good Gustafsson is? How well he moves? How good his TDD is? How he out boxed Jon Jones?
Do they forget that Cormier is not the type of guy who shoots double legs from half way across the cage and actually needs to get close to work his wrestling?
Or that even for a compact fighter he rarely pressures people and never moves his head? Or even kicks (something that would come in handy against Gus) or has good footwork... He will be a sitting duck for Gustafsson straight punches.
I will gladly look a right prick if i am wrong... But this is Gustafsson's fight.
I know a 240lb lb who has had 39 fights and never knocked anyone who, its pretty impressively awful http://boxrec.com/boxer/15802
Its convince me that size does now always equal power. At LHW... nearly said Phil Davis, but that proves your point more than mine considering his last fight. But i still don't this Davis knocks out anyone with an average or above chin... i think the percentages of him knocking out a prime Henderson is barely above 0.
I know everybody loves Gus but he's about to get mauled. and mauled some more until eventually he quits just like AJ, he'll break and be happy to let that choke in.
....or maybe he doesn't break and he just gets mauled for 5 rounds.
Okay Gus beats Conor for worst appearance after a weight cut. Wow.
