Following his second flyweight title-fight loss to champion Demetrious Johnson, second-ranked John Dodson is moving back to the 135-pound weight class.

Dodson (17-7) was defeated by Johnson a second time at UFC 191 on Sept. 5 by unanimous decision. His only two losses inside the octagon are to the flyweight champion. He’s fought his last seven fights as a flyweight but is no stranger to the bantamweight division.

Dodson earned his place in the UFC by winning The Ultimate Fighter 14 bantamweight tournament in December 2011. He defeated reigning bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw in the season finale, stopping him with strikes in the opening round. Days later, the Las Vegas-based fight promotion announced the creation of the 125-pound weight class, and Dodson made the move down.

Dodson expects to return to action as a bantamweight in the first quarter of 2016. With a win over the current titleholder, “The Magician” could become an immediate contender at 135-pounds.

The UFC’s 145-pound division just got a little bit deeper. Top ten-ranked lightweight Myles Jury (15-1) will make his featherweight debut against Charles Oliveira (20-5, 1 NC) on the UFC on Fox 17 fight card on Dec. 19. The announcement came on this week’s edition of UFC Tonight.

The decision to drop down from the 155-pound weight class comes after Jury’s first career loss, a unanimous decision defeat to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 182 in January. Currently ranked ninth in the lightweight division, Jury started his career with a 15-fight winning streak. He holds wins over Michael Johnson, Diego Sanchez and Takanori Gomi. He’ll have the opportunity to jump into the featherweight top ten ranks if he’s able to get back the seventh-ranked Oliveira in December.

Oliveira had a four-fight winning streak snapped in his last outing at UFC Fight Night 74 in August, losing to fifth-ranked Max Holloway due to a neck injury. The Brazilian earned three Performance of the Night bonuses in his four previous bouts, including banking two bonuses for his UFC Fight Night 67 submission win over Nik Lentz in May. Oliveira hopes to rebound by spoiling Jury’s featherweight debut.

Smart move from Dodson. It should help his conditioning moving up. He's very short, but he's also very muscular for a 125er. Cutting 10 pounds less each fight can't hurt.

He's in no mans land at this point in the flyweight division due to losing to Mighty Mouse twice. The only interesting fight for him left would have been against fellow no man lander, Benavidez. Ultimately, the fight would have meant nothing for either of them other than deciding who's number 2 in the division. At 135, his speed advantage should help significantly. After just a few wins, if TJ is still champ, he could even make a case for a title shot considering he beat TJ to win his ultimate fighter season. It may not unfold this way, especially if TJ loses his belt before then, but the possibilities are there. He's got more options at 135 than he does at 125 at least. What was he going to do, wait for Mighty Mouse to lose his title or vacate it? Not likely given his record seeking ambition. I don't exactly see anyone that will probably take his title soon either. Anyways, I hope Dodson does well at 135.

Not sure how I feel about Jury dropping to featherweight. He has lost one fight in the UFC, and it's not like it was because he was undersized. Think he's giving up on 155 too early? Oh well, I guess he knows his body and if he thinks he'd have more success at 145, I suppose we'll have to find out.

Dodson will be much more effective at 135. 135'ers fight at a slower pace than 125'ers and cardio won't be as much of an issue.

Diego Sanchez dropped to 145 awhile back. Jury dropping down could set up a potential Diego Sanchez vs Myles Jury rematch. I think Diego's fighting Ricardo Lamas.
