Fighter psychology and beating Fedor

A lot of people lately has considered Brandon Vera cocky since he said something about being able to beat Fedor. In the ufcjunkie live chat with Hendo he said he thought he'd be able to beat Fedor (despite getting his ass arm barred to him by the nogueira brothers). Obviously we in this forum pretty much flame fighters for making these kind of comments.

But consider this. Some fighters may need to compare themselves all the times to other fighters and think they're the best to actually be able to psychologically be able to win.

So next time a fighter speculates on beating Fedor (and note that they often say "i think i CAN beat him", not "I WILL beat him") please don't be too hard on him. Not all fighters are cool enough not to compare themselves with other people all the time.

Of course.

Tito Ortiz probably does this best out of everyone.

In fight psychology it's Fedor and Randy.

I agree completely. As a fighter you have to believe yourself to be the best otherwise, you have already lost. There is a difference between confident and cocky and disrespectful. Example"

Confident - Fedor is a great fighter, but I believe I can overcome his Sambo and Judo skills and apply my own game and defeat him.

Cocky - Fedor just looks good because he's never fought anyone like me. After he's lying face down on the canvas there will be no doubt as to who's the best."

That's why you have to love Fedor. Even when he's the clearly dominant fighter (pretty much always I guess ) he still gives respect to his opponent. I wish young fighters would learn (some have) that if you give respect to your opponent, it makes you look all that much better when you win.
