Is pound for pound based soley on record?

Is peoples perception of p4p based solely on mma record? Ive never encountered a system of actually mapping out "pound for pound". If you rank people according to their records there are a few guys at the top who shouldnt be there and some guys at the bottom who would be severely undervalued... so my question is how should/ can it be measured?

IMO pound for pound is determined not only by a fighters record but the quality of opponents they have fought and beaten as well as their ability to show well rounded skills.

Fedor and GSP are great examples.

And guys like Dan Henderson who have been at the top of 2 weight classes, BJ Penn also.

Its nothing to do with records as far as im concerned.

I would normally count the fighters skill levels and what is displayed in a fight. One bad loss for me doesn't determine a fighters credibility to be the best P4P fighter, but rather their ability to handle situations in the match-up.

Best P4P fighter IMO comes down to a combination of Talent, Size, and Opponents beaten (Extra points for more recent fights). Fedor is so dominate that he really domiantes rankings but since he is so big it makes it hard to put him at #1. BJ Penn has beaten no one top class in 3 years so I can't put him in the #1 spot. Shogun is a fantastic fighter but is also like Fedor in a Heavier weightclass. Right now I have to go with GSP even though he is not really a WW since he is huge bigger than many MW's. but he is the smallest guy with the great talent and he has the strongest record under 205.

i think PFP is garbage. cause it all depends who fights who in their class, how often, and how the wins and losses happen.

like, there's no such thing as the best fighter ever... as much as i tug on Bas's scrote, you never can tell across all weight classes who's the best.

Np and I pretty much agree with you too. I really like GSP and he's a great fighter but I've never heard of anyone putting him above the Fedor.

Pound for pound shouldnt have anything to do with a fighters weight, its there skill set in relation to other peoples, hence the name pound for pound. Its a bit silly to say fedor cant be number 1 because he's so big. Also I dont think its based solely on record at all otherwise roger huerta would be at number 1 lightweight and Rich Franklin would be above anderson silva at middleweight.
