With a fight near his hometown looming, undefeated lightweight contender Frankie Edgar (7-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has signed a three-fight extension with the UFC, according to the Houston Chronicle‘s Steve Sievert.

The signing assures that one of the sport’s most promising 155-pound fighters remains with the UFC for the near future.

Edgar recently told MMAjunkie.com’s Sam Caplan that he’s set to face UFC veteran Spencer Fisher (20-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) at UFC 78 in November. The event takes place Nov. 17 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and is expected to air on pay-per-view.

Edgar made his Octagon debut at UFC 67 with one of the most excruciating finishes of the 2007 fight season. With a unanimous-decision victory over a very tough Tyson Griffin nearly in the bag, Edgar got caught in a kneebar with less than a minute remaining in the fight. His knee popped and hyper-extended, but Edgar held on and picked up the victory. The performance earned the former Clarion University wrestler “Fight of the Night” honors and a fat bonus check.

The 25-year-old returned at UFC 73 in July and scored a TKO over Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Mark Bocek in the closing seconds of the first round.

Good news, this kid is going to continue to move up the rankings. I'm excited to see him and Spencer get it on, should be a ridiculous fight.

Better against Edgar just seems like a bad idea at this point in his career so I'll be taking him.

I like this kid..very excting to watch! True MMA fighter right there can stand and when on the ground is awesome as well. I cant wait for the Spencer fight. I think Spencer will take it..but it could still go either way. Fights are starting to get harder to pick these days. :dunno:

this is gonna be a rediculously good fight!! i cant wait. man the 155 division could have so many "dream" matchups if they did it right. kenflo/din thomas was one, (tho i wish it would have happened without din busting his knee) fisher/edgar, huerta/guida, penn/sherk or stevenson, it goes on and on and on. if diego drops down thats another huge addition to a division that is shaping up to be one of the strongest in the ufc imo.
man i love mma!
