Eye Surgery Forces Marvin Eastman out of UFC 77

Marvin “the Beastman” Eastman’s quest for the UFC middleweight title hit a roadblock after a recent visit to the doctor. The UFC veteran had eye surgery last week, and as a result, had to pull out of next month’s UFC 77 fight with UFC newcomer Demian Maia.

Eastman notified MMAjunkie.com (UFC news, MMA news, UFC rumors, UFC gossip, fighter interviews and event previews and recaps - MMAjunkie.com (formerly UFCjunkie.com)) of the surgery, which will keep him out of action for the next month. He stressed that the condition was not an injury, and instead, was a genetic condition that worsened from years of wearing eyeglasses.

“I had a weak spot on my retina for a long time, and about two weeks ago, it tore a little bit,” Eastman said. “It felt like sleepy eye. I went in to check it out last Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and I was in surgery by 7. It’s fixed now, and I’ve got to chill a month and can’t fight until November.“

Eastman doesn’t know if he’ll fight at Newark, New Jersey’s UFC 78 event in November, but says he’ll be ready if the organization needs him.

Eastman last fought in the UFC against then-newcomer Quinton Jackson back in February. Giving up a major height and reach advantage, Eastman suffered a second-round knockout at the UFC 67 fight. Afterward, the corrections officer dropped to 185 pounds and headed to Steele Cage Promotions’ first “International Fighting Organization” show in Las Vegas. There, he defeated Rob Kimmons to win the the organization’s middleweight title.

Eastman says he’ll return to the IFO this weekend to cheer on teammates Eric Pele, Dan Evensen and JR Sims, who will all be fighting at the event. The event takes place Friday at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and features a main event of Kimmons vs. Tristan Yunker.

MMAjunkie.com should have word of Eastman’s replacement in the next day or two.

Damn, I was looking forward to seeing Marvin fight at MW, and finally get his UFC win. Oh well, maybe next time. At least his surgery was a success.

I seriously hope Joe Silva books Eastman vs McFedries sometime in the future.

Yeah 185 is gonna be so much better for him. Good thing the surgery wasn't anything that would keep him out for that long. A month isn't long to just chill out. I'd cardio it up in the meantime
