A column on Sherdog got me thinking about this. Chuck fought a guy who knew exactly what he would do, and still did it. He fought like it was Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture or Babalu Sobral on the other side of the Octagon, waiting to take him down.
Of course, Jaridine never even tried. And he knew Chuck would never shoot, because Chuck never shoots.
But why didn't he? Jardine was wide open to shots, the way he threw those kicks. Chuck -- who does ahave a wrestling background, let's not forget -- had many chances to drive in, put his opponent on his back and drop bombs, maybe even a submission. Keith never would have seen that coming.
Maybe Chuck, convinced that the Rampage loss was a fluke, still believed to much in the flawlessness of his style, that he just made a mistake against Quinton.
Hopefully he still has enough will and enough time to change his ways. If he has other skills, why not use them?
after watching the fight again last night, i noticed chuck could have easily knocked keith out in the first round. chuck landed a few hard rights, which sent keith running. keith was obviously rocked, but chuck just stood back and let him recover.
chuck needs to turn his 'im ganna kill him' mode back on if he wants to win anymore fights.
In hindsight it seems like a decent option, but Jardine's ground game is probably superior to Chuck's. Who does Chuck train with that he could learn any ground game from? Jardine trains with GSP, Nate, formerly Diego, and obviously Greg Jackson is a pretty good teacher.
Other than his striking, it seems like Chuck's only asset is his defensive wrestling. I'm pretty sure Chuck knows that, and that is why he doesn't try to ever take the fight to the ground.

True. Chuck is just so entirely 1-dimensional in his fighting it is frustrating. Funny thing is though, Jardine was rocked in round 1, and his chin is insane. It took Houston Alexander a whole pile of crazy hard uppercuts to finally knock Jardine out, most men woulda been out 20 punches earlier than Keith in that fight, Keith was like a human wave master punching bag that keeps popping up. Chuck's style would probably have worked against a guy with a normal human chin instead of Keith's granite billy goat beard.

You might be right. But following up one of his punches that connected with a quick shot and some punches -- they are Chuck punches, after all -- or elbows on the ground might have ended the fight way back in the first.
I don't think he should have. I doubt he would have know what to do on the ground. And if Jardine had some knowledge on the ground, Chuck would be gone.
Possibly he could have in the 3rd when he needed to do something to win.
Jardine's noted for having a good ground game so I just dont think it was something chuck felt comfortable with. chuck did rock him but that doesn’t mean he was easy prey and chucks respect for jardine might have been too much but then it might have been because he knew how much power Jardine has and didn’t want to jump on him just to get rocked himself.
I saw a few times Chuck hit him hard and did move in and throw a combo only to get hit with one or two shots by Jardine that would back him up so must be something to Jardines punches or chuck would have stayed in there looking for a KO.
Chuck just got exposed, the UFC built up this big Mike Tyson fear around him cos of his seven fight brutal KO win streak, but they were against wrestlers and ground specialist which Chucks style is taylor made to beat. Give him someone who is a skilled striker and he has always struggled. He got bossed by Rampage twice and was getting bossed by Overeem and Mezger. His ability to take a shot and brutal power saw him through those last two fights but now that he is older I feel he's lost a lick of speed and can't absorb the shots as well as he used to (he recovered well from the jardine knock down but looked a different fighter afterwards). I'll probably get flamed for this but the Jardine fight for me was a mixture of Chuck looking old and his style being exposed.
I don't think it's him being exposed. I think he's just getting older, getting slower.
What makes everybody think Chuck has 0 ground game? I would say Jardine would be stronger on the ground but yeah. He just needs to fight smarter, I think. I don't think he is one dimensional but he fights one dimensional. He needs to fight more like a mixed martial artist.
