"Shocking" News: Conor McGregor doesn't want to fight Jose Aldo next.

The big question on everyone’s mind following Conor McGregor’s win over Nate Diaz at UFC 202 is what’s next for the Irish superstar. The UFC has already declared Conor would go back down to 145 and defend his featherweight title. But when asked if interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo was next, Conor didn’t mince words.

“Probably not,” he admitted.

“The belt situation is lingering,” McGregor explained during a backstage interview following his victory. “I’ve got to talk. I’ve upset Lorenzo [Fertitta] and Dana White there, I know it was [Lorenzo’s] last day a few days ago. I was expecting Lorenzo and his family to come [to UFC 202] for me. And I’m speaking to the new people now, so I dunno. I’ve got to talk about what’s next. There’s a lot of options. And some might not be this sport. So we’ll see.”

That’s a pretty overt reference to a superfight with Floyd Mayweather, a match up McGregor recently claimed was in the financing stages. Later during the full press conference, Conor elaborated on his disinterest in fighting Aldo so soon after their last fight eight months ago.

“How long was I going back and forth with Jose? That must have been a two year build up,” he said. “It’s hard for me to get excited about that, especially after his last performance. It was a decision, he didn’t go out and get it like I wanted him to get it. So I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m the 145 pound champion. The interim 145 pound champion is a man that I KO’d in 13 seconds.”

If he was worried about the UFC’s threat to strip him of his featherweight title if he didn’t defend it, McGregor didn’t show it.

“I don’t think they’re gonna do that,” he said. “I mean, how can they do that? If they wanna do that, if they wanna give my belt to the guy I KO’d in 13 seconds and bury that division in the prelims and the fight pass and stuff, because that’s what they’re gonna do, we’ll see. How can they do that? What would that do to the division if the guy I KO’d in 13 seconds is the unified champion?”

“So we’ve got a lot to talk about. I’m in a good position right now, and that was built through hard work, and I’m going to capitalize on that.” He ended the press conference on a cryptic note. “There’s a lot of stuff in the pipeline. S**t’s about to hit the fan, I feel. So we’ll see

As we all expected really, I'm guessing it'll be Alvarez for the lightweight belt first, if he ever goes down. And if he wins it he could fight Aldo at 155 for that belt, so no harm done really. Also he might happily relinquish the belt to Aldo if he wins to Alvarez.

Conor's cardio is so bad at 170.

Imagine how bad his cardio will be if he cut weight down to 145.

Aldo's cardio isn't good considering he only fought the last minute of each round when he fought Frankie Edgar.

I wonder what Conor did to himself for his cardio to be so off the charts terribad.

Conor had good cardio up until his coach started saying: "You've seen Conor on salad, now watch what he does on steak".

Conor + steak seems like the death knell for his cardio, maybe if he goes back to eating salads his cardio will recover.

(Judging by UFC embeddeds, Conor looked like he was eating a ton of meat leading up to UFC 202 also)

Can never tell if you're trolling or not. His cardio at FW is proven - see holloway and mendes fights.

Adding on extra weight and eating his way up to 170 caused problems with his cardio.

Yeah, enough calling others trolling (goes for everyone), people simply have different opinions.

As for not fighting Aldo, he will. He's just talking as usual. His next fight will be at 145 against Aldo. I'm sure he sees it as an easy fight, he KO'd him effortlessly in 13 seconds, and Aldo couldn't even hurt Frankie, that's with a ton more reach, szie and supposed "power". As for weight, He's made the cut countless times, why wouldn't he make it again? His cardio is also really good at 145, he's gone hard 3 rounds before, and he was fully energized after being smothered by Chad for two rounds. The extra weight he put on to fight at 170 slowed him down. It's no coincidence that the guy looks in phenomenal shape and then all of a sudden when he fights with 20 pounds and extra bulk on him, he starts slowing. He said it himself, he doesn't even have abs at 170. He's not in proper shape and form. Make no mistake, Conor is a 145 fighter. That's where most of his career has been, it's where he holds championship gold, it's where he KO'd the "#1 P4P fighter" in 13 seconds. He will be there again, more than likely his next fight.

How can you bring "Aldo didn't even hurt Frankie" when he defeated Frankie Edgar twice, while McGregor clearly ducked Frankie Edgar? That makes no sense. Frankie Edgar is a very tough opponent many thought would take the interim belt by beating an unstable and traumatized Jose Aldo. Did not happen. Aldo came with a good plan and won without a doubt again.

You just don't compare two wins against a ducked fight.

Some would argue Aldo deserves the rematch as he was the P4P no.1 and got caught, it will literally happen to every fighter in their career - like how Conor got caught and subbed by Nate, but was granted an instant rematch.

I'd be all for Conor fighting Alverz or Mayweather or whoever. But if its not Aldo then he needs to be stripped of the belt. This charade of Conor being the FW 'Champion' has gone on long enough.

Obviously the divisions are a mess so here's what I would do.

Step One - Book Aldo/Holloway for the interim FW title
Step Two - Book Alvarez/McGregor for the LW title
Step Three - Book Ferguson/Nurakamedov for the interim LW title
Step Four - Book Thompson/Maia/Condit winner for the interim WW title
Step Five - Book GSP/Woodley for the WW title
Step Six - Book Weidman/Souza for the interim MW title
Step seven - Book Jones/Johnson for the the interim LHW title

You get an interim title and you get an interim title and you get an interim title

If he can make the weight, this is probably just a power play, because he's right about if they just give the belt back to Aldo. Hand him the belt when the guy they stripped KOd him in 13 seconds and they kill the division, which had little interest before Conor. He just wants to get paid, he just made $3 million.

Especially now with this experience under his belt. Diaz taught McGregor a lot. Humbled him in a good way.

One issue going back down in weight might be speed, though. Fighting heavier slower fights can mess up your rhythm. Hopefully he can transition back. It's going to be one hell of a cut.

For the sake of the division and critics he should defend his title then immediately challenge the lw champ. No more 170. It's way too taxing on em. Initially I wanted to see him vs Cerrone. Maybe at 155, but definitely not at 170. Cowboy looks juiced to the max at 170. His speed is the same, but his power goes up significantly. Dude grappled with Rick and held his own.

Cowboy vs Rory/Brown then off to the belt. I think Cowboy vs Wonderboy would be quite interesting. Who wouldn't want to see Cowboy vs Diaz II.

A lot of 155ers pose big challenges; RDA, Edson Barboza, Pettis (I dunno why he's moving down), Khabib, and Tony Ferguson. Tony is the biggest hater. He should have fought Khabib, but Diaz would be fun too.

He is just playing mind games, if he fights at that division again, he will fight Aldo 100%. He is just trying to annoy Aldo again, and by the looks of things, its working.

The next months Conor will piss all over Aldo's name constantly, then the fight will probably happen in NY.

Yeah especially at a higher weight where one is carrying more mass which may very well be muscle which draws from one's gas tank. Conor looked slower at welterweight in both fights. The only difference is that McGregor had a detailed plan the second time around compared to the first time.

Yeah his coaches said on the countdown to their original bout that Conor is measuring everything possible to make 145. He didn't really have the energy to properly train for a fight like he could at lightweight which is probably better. At welterweight he is just undersized considering even if he puts muscle on it's his natural walking weight.
