Rory MacDonald has found a new home.

The long-time top UFC welterweight has signed a new deal with Bellator MMA after a brief free agency period. Sources close to the deal confirmed the news with FloCombat on Wednesday.

On Tuesday evening, the UFC declined to exercise the standard matching clause included in all UFC fighter contracts after being presented with MacDonald's offer sheet from Bellator. On Wednesday, MacDonald was removed from the UFC's official rankings. FloCombat's sources also confirmed the UFC decided not to match Bellator's offer.

MacDonald has reigned as one of the top 170-pound fighters in the world for the past several years, and has been involved in several classic matchups inside the UFC cage. The 27-year-old has hit a rough patch in back to back losses to Robbie Lawler and Stephen Thompson, but has been a perennial top prospect and title contender since signing with the UFC in 2010.

In inking MacDonald, Bellator has landed what is certainly the biggest free agent prize in promotional history.

Wow! This is huge! I think it's the best signing Bellator has landed ever. The dude is legit top 5 and maybe even top 3 in the world. Not to mention he has a bunch fight of the night awards and a fight of the year award under his belt. This is a great reason to watch Bellator.

I think Rory actually has better fights outside the UFC then in it at this point. Plus he's not going to be shelved for a year/six months like the UFC did with him. He's also going to be able to jump weight classes now and we can see him at MW.

But letting Rory go is kinda Hypocritical of the UFC when you have Dana saying shit about Bellator letting go of Askren. Rory just fought for the title then he loses to a guy who in my mind was clearly gonna be the champ someday. If Condit and Maia weren't about to basically fight a title eliminator I'd say Rory is def the #4 ranked WW in the world. DUMB

Yah he was stuck in a tough spot losing to Robbie twice and Wonderboy although he has a W against the current champ. I say he wins the title then resigns with the UFC within three years. He knows deep down the UFC belt is what he wants.
