I know this will be a noob-magnet who wants to flame post, but ill say it anyways..
I dont know if any1 saw yesterday's boxing event, but the Champion, A giant russian who's 300+ pounds and 7 foot tall, won his fight. And everybody agrees he's horrible at boxing.
Sylvia pretty much falls into the same category. He's horrible standing, but he's so tall, has so much reach that it doesn't really matter. In fact, from what i have seen, all tall guys seem to suck standing up, for the simple reason that they don't have a good base.
Anyways, the point is, Sylvia might be horrible standing up, but it doesn't really matter. Odd-wise, he's favored to beat Vera. But the great thing is, if Vera wins, it's going to be exciting, because when a giant falls, it makes a lot of noise
I think Sylvia will take this one.

do you mean valuev? since when does everyone agree he has terrible boxing? i follow boxing and most agree that he uses solid technique and picks his power shots while sprucing up his opponent with jabs. he mixes attacks well and relies on picking power shots, just like muhammad ali.
anyway, sylvia is alike in this fashion. (old) sylvia used the jab effectively to fluster his opponent and frustrate them to the point of making a mistake, and then unleashing a well placed power shot, a perfect example is tra tellingman. sylvia picked him apart with relatively light shots, and then nearly kicked his head off when tellingman stopped defending, knowing he was behind in the round.
just because someone doesnt swing 4 times a second, doesnt mean they have bad technique.

Man, I'm really excited for this fight. I wamt Brandon Vera to win, but I'm not exactly sure how. Tim Sylvia definitely has the advantage going in, but we'll see how versatile and smart Vera can be.

Yeah, I think that if Tim comes angry, then Vera's in huge trouble. Tim knows how to use his reach, and really, he's definitely dangerous on the feet and on the ground. Tim Sylvia did hang with Jeff Monson on the ground, good mention, and I don't see Vera doing anything to him there.
However, if Tim comes in tentative, then Vera could just slowly pick him apart. I'd like to see Tim Sylvia get back to his Telligman kicking self, and I think he can beat Brandon Vera.

I'm very suprised with all the Sylvia support. A few months ago, after his big loss to Randy, I heard nothing but negatives.
I think that Sylvia will have a very tough time with Vera's active and aggressive game, and I give it to Vera in the second round by submission.

I think Tim can overwhelm Vera bad. Sylvia has the power to finish most of the hw division, I too hope he starts using it. Reguardless, if Vera can beat Tim I'll buy into the hype. I see Sylvia winning though (if hungry), and then Rogan saying Vera should drop to 205.

Valuev's a giant, and while his boxing skills might be mediocre, he's athletic and has good distance control. While he isn't the same kind of kinetic genius that Ali or any of the other fight-night savants were, he's not a bad boxer. If he was, someone would get inside of him and pound him. No one has pulled that off, and while he hasn't fought the best competition, the guys he's beaten aren't cans.
But back to the sport that people are here to talk about:
Sylvia is a very good technical striker. I don't know what you're smoking, but he's knocked out guys with head kicks (Tra Telligman), he's put together great, complicated combinations (Cabbage Correira) and he's stopped some of the best strikers in the sport in their tracks (Andrei Arlovski).
I'm not going to say that I like Tim Sylvia, because I've always found his attitude irritating, but he's proved that he is technical. In fact, I'd go so far as to say his technique is better than some of the guys he trains with, and not just Matt Hughes. He controls his stance alot better than Jens Pulver and utilizes kicks and knees at close range better than Robbie Lawler. (I like Lawler more, but it's the truth)
The fact is, to credit Sylvia's massive success to his size is just ridiculous. The man has held the UFC heavyweight belt twice and he's pounded down a guy bigger than he is (Gan McGee). I'm as disappointed as anyone with his last few fights, but stop saying that he's garbage and watch his highlight reel.
Vera deserves this fight, but I think he's in over his head. I'd like to see the winner of this fight matched up with Kongo (who'd kill Vera), purely on the basis that that fight would be a technical war.
For those who don't want to read the lengthy post, here's the point:
Stop talking trash about Sylvia. He might be a pantspooping, reality show, giant slob, but he deserves his position in the sport. He knocked out a sh*t load of people to get it.
