Why Sylvia Is Going to Ruin Vera

im not a HUGE fan of either guy (would randomly cheer for vera) but i just think sylvia is going to win for several reasons...

looking at his fight with fabiano sherner, he came out tentative and it took him over 8 minutes to find an opening for a knee. sherner has HORRIBLE standup but had a reach advantage, and this may have been the cause for the tentativeness. if he goes up against a guy thats half a foot taller than him, he will have a VERY hard time putting a knee in, and has a great opportunity of eating leather upon trying to close it in.

on the ground, i will give the advantage to sylvia. he has shown that he can compete with MUCH MUCH better submission fighters who are 20 times stronger than vera (monson) and nearly subbed him. not only does vera have way less experience on the ground with a guy anywhere as big as sylvia, he is also nowhere near as strong and his best hope would be to pull gaurd and either commit to a triangle or fake a tri and switch to an armbar.

experience easily goes to sylvia. he has had many more fights with higher ranked fighters and overall a better record and has shown that he can easily handle 3 rounds.

in summary, vera is a cool guy but sylvia is a bad matchup for him and he better get some 6'6'' + training partners or he will be picked apart.

what do you guys think?

agreed, unless vera steps in and lands a big shot i don't see him winning...

sylvia probably won't submit vera, but he'll probably finish him...

I agree totally about Sylvia beating Vera. Although the recent things happening lately make me think otherwise. But, logically, and in theory, Sylvia should win. It seems that the youngers guys have been beating the vets lately though so you never know.

I think it will be a pretty good fight. Either man could win at any point with how these guys strike. Tim does have ok boxing for a giant but he leaves his head in one position as he strikes while Vera uses head movement as an advantage. Vera's footwork is 3 times better than tims, he comes in and out quickly and utilizes the jab pretty well. But, Tims long legs will keep Vera pretty busy if he looks for a takedown. Hard to predict I probably won't bet on it.

I could see Vera winning a decision using a stick and move strategy but I think Sylvia is bigger, stronger, and will use his size to win this one. Like the last guy said I wouldnt bet on it.

I'll go with Tim on this one as well, I hope he makes a quick example of Vera and makes him drop a class. Then maybe we can see some Sylvia vs some top fighters.

Syliva by KO or Vera by Split Decision

I can't see either of these guys getting too much positive energy from the audience.

After watching Sylvia v Monson, I think that Sylvia's ground game is alot better than I use to believe it was. He's got alot of power, and he's very quick and surprisingly technical for a guy as big as he is.

The only way I see Vera winning this fight is by decision. I don't think that Vera has the power that a guy like Arlovski has, the kind of power needed to knock Sylvia down and capitalize.

The biggest difference in my opinion, as far as Tim's advantages go isn't just height, it's size in general. Not only does he have 6 inches on Vera, he's got 45-50 pounds. The power in one of Sylvia's punches comes from the enormous amount of weight that he has behind it, and that really has to make a guy like Vera wonder.

I can't imagine Vera winning this matchup without the judges. If Sylvia comes out slow and uneasy after his last loss, the preceding poor performances and his surgery, I can see him being too slow and hiding behind his jab for three rounds, only to lose on the scorecards, but I can't see Vera finishing.

I think that Vera, as talented as he might be, should not be fighting heavyweights. He hasn't had the opportunity to fight the combination of talented striking and size, only really the size factor in a few of his fights, and even those weren't as extreme as it will be with Sylvia.

That said, we'll see how it goes, but I would really like to see Big Tim show some technical striking and get back to his old form. I'd like to see him hammer Vera with some leg kicks and some combinations and then beat him late in the first with a big right hook.

But that's just me.

I think one of the reasons why Monson's grappling was so ineffective in that fight was because he was absolutely dwarfed by Sylvia's height.

Monson had a hard time punching Sylvia in the face from his closed guard while Sylvia could still jab away at Monson off his back with ease.

Brandon Vera, on the other hand, is much taller than Monson and would probably be able to mount some offense in the closed guard of Sylvia. I would not be surprised if Vera submits Sylvia.

However, I do agree that Sylvia should win on paper ... but then again, he should have won against Couture, but he didn't (although he was injured).

Anyways, I think the old Tim Sylvia would wreck Vera. But if Sylvia just sits back and tries to jab away at Vera, I think Vera could surprise Sylvia and knock him out.

I'm not a Sylvia hater and I actually defended him prior to his fight with Couture. I really wish Sylvia went back to his older self and just starts beating the crap out of everyone again. However, I will be rooting for Vera in this fight.

Well I dont think that Sylvia is going to make that jab mistake again. He realizes that this division is going to require more than that now and lets hope that he's adapted to a newer gameplan.
