Hughes vs. Serra: closer than you'd think

I've been thinking about it lately, and it seems to me that Hughes vs. Serra is going to MUCH closer than everyone is expecting. Hughes himself said that he just doesn't see Serra as a top ten welterweight and that his name seems out of place when put with Hughes', GSP's and Penn's. I, however, think Hughes would be outclassed by Penn, GSP, Kos, and Fitch if they fought anytime soon.

Hughes is the most successful welterweight in history, but the talent pool is so much deeper now than in the past. He's just as good now as he's ever been, but look at his last few fights. He was being dominated by BJ and would have lost minus the rib injury. He was subsequently owned by GSP, and then he won a closer-than-expected match against Lytle. Matt isn't getting worse. The competition is just getting better.

Serra, however, did similarly well against Lytle--although that decision was a bit closer than Hughes'--and he put up a better fight than Hughes against BJ Penn, and he has TKO'd GSP, something that Hughes will never do.

Matt has a legacy on his side, but considering what each guy possesses currently, I think this will be a very close fight.

Randy Couture is the baddest man on the planet!

Favorite Fighters (in no particular order)

1) Randy Couture
2) BJ Penn
3) Chuck Liddell
4) GSP
5) Mark Hunt

wait.. are you kidding ME??

did you just say serra beat lytle more decisively than hughes?? DID YOU WATCH THE FIGHT?? 80% of people agree serra did nothing but hold him against the cage, lytle landed more shots and was more active overall. id say most people think lytle should have won. hughes held lytle down like a 12 year old redheaded girl for 15 minutes straight and basically didnt let him moove an inch. really, go watch those 2 fights now.

and no, hughes hasnt tko'd GSP, hes subbed him. which is harder.

serra will most likely get tooled worse than lytle did, hughes has better striking, 4 times stronger, WAY better conditioning, twenty times the wrestler, and like it or not, better at BJJ in the octagon. there is no single aspect serra is better at, not even CLOSE...

^ I think you need to get off the rockstars or redbull- whatever you drink.

Matt Serra is no chump and I say he has a very good chance at defending his title. Hell, I'm pretty sure he can.

I think Serra is in with a chance, just like ever fighter.

On paper, it appears as if Hughes will beat him but it's what happens inside the octagon that matters.

i really dont see serra taking this one

and this comming from a guy who always counts on the underdog to win like the shogun vs griffin

but im gonna call hughes on this one.....i think hughes needs to win back the title in order to carry out his legacy....i then see two more fights for him a rubber between him and gsp and of course against penn.....i know they both want that one

The most solid advice I can give to anyone who fights BJ Penn is...do not motivate the guy. Lets face it, BJ although talented, is naturally lazy. Your job is to NOT convince him to step on that treadmill.

I think it will be a close fight only due to the style match up, at the same point this will also make this a boring fight! Unless Serra gets it in his head he is now a standup guy, that could be interesting lol

is that just going by records? Serra probably has better stand-up and definitly has a better ground game. Hughes is definitly stonger but so is GSP

I want Serra to win, just so I can see GSP redeem himself. I really doubt that's going to happen though, I see Hughes taking the fight to the ground at will.
