A sub is his only chance here, as we all know this IS going to the ground, and Sherk IS going to be on top. In a decision TOP=WIN. It's either Sherk passing BJ's gaurd 140 times in 25 minutes, or BJ pulls some sh!t off. Which would YOU rather see?
Sherk will not pass BJ's guard. The only person to ever have passed BJ's guard in mma is Hughes because BJ was hurt.

I agree Penn has a really good guard, but if anyone can pass it, it's Sean Sherk. He has an excellent top game and an excellent passing game. He has probably the best base in MMA, and combines his wrestling and bjj very well.

I think Sherk should get the shaft for his positive 'roid test, but god damnit I want this fight to happen. This could truly go either way. I could see Sherk winning via a LnP decision or Penn pulling off a sub.

That's hard to say. BJ is definately the busier fighter, but Sherk is obviously the stronger of the two. But I also think that Penn can do a lot in five rounds. I would like to see this fight.

I think that this would be a real hard fought match, not the snorefestes that Sherk usually puts on. Each guy would have his moments, but at the end BJ would take a close UD. I just don't see Sean tapping to anything. He's one tough SOB, he fought Kenflo with a torn freakin rotator cuff.

Here's a copy and paste of one of my older posts regarding this match up:

I think this match up is very intriguing because of the skills both fighters bring.

Striking:
BJ Penn has powerful hands and isn't afraid to take a punch. Sherk hands are quick and accurate, look at the Diaz fight, he schooled the taller, longer fighter. Edge is BJ, he has the power and is fairly accurate as well. He aims for your face and hits hard.

Wrestling:
BJ's wrestling is underrated in my opinion. He has trained with some of the best. The only wrestler to really outwrestle him recently is GSP and that was only after he gassed. Sherk on the other hand is strong and good at control, I have no doubt that he will get takedowns but... No edge here, Sherk is strong but BJ is adept at defending using his length and flexibility. Sherk will get some takedowns But I think they wil be few and far between with BJ sweeping or escaping every chance he gets.

On the ground:
BJ is second to none on the ground his sweeps and transitions come from nowhere. His ground and pound is powerful and aggressive. Sherk's passing of the guard is good and he uses his strength well on the ground. The thing about last weekend's fight (Franca fight) I noticed was him not doing much damage to Hermes over the course of the fight, despite being on top for most of it. If he has a hard time with Hermes what will he do with Penn who is bigger than Hermes and better at the ground game. Edge is Penn here.

Conditioning:
This is where Sherk shines like no other. He is a monster. He keeps the pressure on for 25 minutes and doesn't wear down. His strength is another factor that helps him control and neutralize his opponents. His only losses are to the 2 strongest WWs in the UFC. BJ has learned his lesson, and just like with his wrestling, he's sought help from professionals that will bring him to his peak. Will it be enough to wage a 5 round war with a monster?? I certainly hope so. Edge is definitely Sherk.

Overall:
BJ is a great mixed martial artist has improved in every aspect of his game. His melding of styles (IMO) is second only to Fedor. Sherk is a like a wrestling match with a jack hammer. He is just going to grind you into dust with every passing moment is lost energy to which he has an endless supply, which makes him only stronger as the match continues.

I know it seems like I think BJ is going to dominate. But, that's far from the truth. Sherk has just as much of a chance to win as BJ. The only reasons I have to put BJ ahead are their matches with like opponents. And BJ's match up with Hughes in particular because I regard Hughes and Sherk pretty equal in the grappling areas. Oh and because I'm quite biased as a BJ fan.

EDIT: I'm sorry this is long.

Mr. Cool Ice has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Sherk isn't in the same league as Penn...he's not even on the same planet. BJ would maul him.

Oh yeah and Sherk is a degenerate little cheat who should be banned for life for not fessing up and taking his punishment like a man.

I pick BJ Penn in this fight for several reasons.

1. Stand up, BJ seems like the better striker.
2. BJ is clearly better on the ground.
3. Judging from BJ vs Hughes, Hughes is a lot stronger than Sherk, and he's also a better grappler but BJ handled it just fine. Hughes' conditioning isn't bad at all either.

I say BJ all day.

1. sherk has an iron chin, and can take any power bj has (so long as he doesn't go poking eyes)

2. i'd give bj the bjj edge, but wrestling? no way. bj will be fighting from his back all night.

3. sherk has far better conditioning that hughes and bj...arguably the best gas tank in the world

I agree, Sherk was taking some serious knees from Franca.. Barely rocked him. I'd say Franca has more KO power than BJ and he couldnt take Sherk out.

Sherk is a real good wrestler, I believe he'll lay and pray out a victory or gas out BJ and force a ref stoppage like Hughes did.
