Your totally right, people just fail to realize this. Plus as other people have stated already most have sponsors to pay them as well while they train.

If you preform well during your initial contract in the UFC and the fans like you, then your pay will increase with your performance.

So to make it simple the more you win the more you earn when you renegotiate your next contract.

People also need to remember the Fertita's just started making money back on their investment last year, I think it was around Silva/Franklin. I do understand the part about the fighters signing the contracts but alot of guys on the lower rungs dont have much of a choice and dont have good representation. Its pretty much take it or leave it. The higher paid fighters on the other hand who seem to have good managers/agents dont seem to have much of an excuse.

It's pretty simple. Fighters sign contracts based on what they and whatever organization they fight for agree that they're worth. They aren't forced to sign these contracts at gunpoint. I'm just sick of people who complain about fighter pay based on the base salary that they make, with no other knowledge of fighter salaries.
