Damone's Fight Of The Week For 10/12/07
Heath Herring vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (UFC 73).

Part 1.

Part 2.
Fun fight, and a nice schooling from Nogueira. Besides the sloppy highkick, Herring practically had nothing. Nogueira looked pretty good here, picking Heath apart standing, and taking things to the ground at will. Nice showing from Nogueira.
Discuss.

But it wasn't, and Nogueira still went on to kick Heath's ass some more.

it was a big match-up for Nog to be introduced to the octogan. Nog pulled off the win and got all of the first-time-cage-jitters out of the way. I think he is experienced enough to be completly ready for the cage for his next fight.

Herring isn't the fighter he was 5-6 years ago, but is still an incredibly hard guy to finish. Nogueira is 70% of that headkick happening, he got over confident and leaned into it (thus getting caught).
Out of all the Pride fighters crossing over, Nogueira has gotten the least love. I was the only guy who thought Nogueira was hardly promoted? Shogun and Cro Cop were put over huge by the ufc, and nobody cares for Nogueira. The only guy who actually took the ufc seriously, trained hard and won convincingly. Now the champion leaves the company to fight another contender. Huge slaps in the face for Minotauro.
Anyways, good choice and finds on the video. I forgot how awesome the entrance tunes are for this one.

Rogan never stoped talking about how Heath screwed up, did he?

No excuses for Nogueira, when you can make a case. Little layoff, first time in a cage in ages and fighting a guy who knows exactly what to expect. But he still wins.
Nogueira was rocked, but he was pulling guard and defending himself.

great point, Big Nog still hasn't gotten the respect or build-up he deserves. it doesn't matter, when he showcases his skills in his next fight all of the bandwagon UFC fans will know him

It's definitely not just you. It seemed like nobody even cared that Nog was coming to the UFC. He was introduced on a PPV, and that was it. Cro Cop, Rampage, & Shogun were given nice video packages, and special devoted to them. Meanwhile, Nogueira gets to fight some guy he beat twice already. Also, people discount Nogueira's nice display in the Octagon. Dude showed some nice striking, and seemed really comfortable in there, almost too comfortable (Which he paid for).
While Shogun & Cro Cop were a bunch of lazy idiots, Nogueira was training hard for his fight, and showed up ready to go. Cro Cop felt he'd walk through everyone and Shogun showed up in piss poor cardio and didn't respect a really good fighter, and he paid for that big time.
So yeah, Nogueira's getting the shaft here, considering he has better credentials than both Mirko & Shogun.

I noticed you've had to defend Nog's performance in this fight many times recently. Coming from mostly those who only saw the high kick. Is that the reason for this being your FOTW?
Anyway, it was a good fight. The kick was brutal, but I'm glad the fight was allowed to continue and Nog was given a chance to show his resiliency and toughness by regaining control of the fight and coming out with the decision.
