Khabib vs Ferguson off due to Ferguson wanting equal pay

Quote:
Rumors of a planned interim lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson were true, UFC President Dana White said. However, Ferguson’s pay demands brought the plan to a halt.

White spoke to the media during today’s UFC 207 media day and said that, while talk of the fight taking place in Russia was misguided, the talk of the bout between Nurmagomedov (24-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) and Ferguson (22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC) was entirely in line with the UFC’s plans.

“Yes, that’s true,” White told MMAjunkie. “We were trying to make that fight. Tony said he will not do that fight unless he makes the same exact money that Khabib makes. Khabib has a different deal. So, that ain’t happening. Count that one out.”

Some questioned what the issue with Ferguson wanting more money was. White said it was simply a matter of Ferguson recently signing a new deal and needing to honor his contract.

After all, White said, the media would have a field day were he to ever be the one not honoring a deal.

“He has a contract that he just signed not long ago,” White said. “There’s a thing where these guys — I honor every contract, no matter what it is. I get into some (expletive) deals, too. You know what I mean? You’ve got a guy who is making tons of money, but he was a champion. That was the deal. I cut that deal and I signed it. I’ve got to live with my deal. When you sign a deal, you honor your deal.

“Or, you at least get to a point where, most guys never make it to the end of a UFC contract. They get to within three fights and then we want to sit back down and start talking. You can say, I don’t want to sit down and talk yet, I’m going to ride this thing out and I’m going to become a free agent and test the market and see what I can bring in. Guys have done it, Dan Henderson did it, Rory MacDonald, Lorenz Larkin. Ride the thing out and become a free agent. But honor your deal. I have to honor my deals. Imagine if I didn’t honor a deal. You guys would be (expletive) all over me, right?”

So, for now, the plans for a highly anticipated bout taking place for an interim title are dead.

Tony's on a 54/54 contract so it's not terrible money, but the guys given you seven bonuses in his last six fights and you aren't going to give him equal pay for a main event fight...WTF.

Also LOL at Dana White talking about honoring deals, unless they are title shots

It's the Conor effect. I gotta do the same thing and basically request what I feel I should get paid otherwise clients or employers won't pay a cent more than they have to.

Sucks, cuz I really want to see that fight, but good for Tony although he did sign the deal.

I sympathise with him, he really should be on more than that but this is an odd time to start making demands. He's one win away from being in a good position to renegotiate his deal, plus a fight with Conor.

Totally agree. There's a time for disputing pay. This isn't it.

Thats not the point. This is Tonys biggest fight to date. A fight, should he win, opens some big f*ucking doors. Is this really the time for him to be thinking about money? That's like you or me bitching about pay, one day before an interview for a *much* better position.

This is Tony being dumb. He is for sure getting an extra 40k from Reebok is he takes this fight as well. What's a better deal than almost making 100k no matter what with a red panty night option soon after? I would tell them I'll fight Khabib for this pay but when it comes Conor time I need the boost. That deal would almost certainly work. The UFC wouldn't give Conor 3.5 mill and Tony 54k right?

You're always wrong!

Dana White may talk about honouring the contract that Tony agreed to but it's not a fair market. The UFC has a total monopoly and its contracts are entirely for its own interests.Tony is doing the right thing here because he might get injured or lose the fight and it is a very epic fight. Two absolute killers but the top of their game maybe they don't have huge legacy but it is a massive fight. What Tony can take home after taxes 50 or $60,000, a fight that is going to earn the UFC hundreds of million. Stick to your guns is what I say.

Aldo's only real issue would be dealing with the size disadvantage. Skill wise, Aldo is an awful matchup for Khabib. People seem to have forgotten how good he is after all the Conor drama. He has unreal takedown defense and would blast Khabib on the feet.
