UFC Parting Ways With Broadcaster Mike Goldberg

Quote:

A lot of big changes are afoot under the UFC’s new ownership, including a potential shake-up with the broadcasting team that has helped define the brand over the past decade.

In the lead-up to UFC 206, Dana White revealed that he is targeting a new commentator to slot alongside popular color analyst Joe Rogan, who recently restructured his contract so he only broadcasts North American pay-per-view events.

“This has been my dream to assemble this dream team of commentating,” White told Sportsnet Canada. “I’ve wanted this guy for years and I’m working on it.”

White did not divulge what this could mean for longtime play-by-play man Mike Goldberg, who could stay on to partner with Brian Stann, Kenny Florian, Dan Hardy and the like.

Either way, it appears the wheels are already in motion for this mystery broadcaster to be brought in. Who are the outside hires that could be under consideration?

Chael slipped and hinted at this two weeks ago, but I didn't know it actually had wheels.

This doesn't mean Mike is outright leaving the UFC, just that he might be reshuffled. Dana isn't going to ditch a guy who has been as loyal as Goldberg has over the past decade. Either that or like everything else he's getting orders from above.

I've never really liked Joe or Goldberg commentary. I was brought up on BBC radio boxing coverage and it could often be more exciting than what the fight on screen.

How can you not like those two on commentary? Joe is hilarious and Mike is the perfect collected personality to Joe flying off the handle.

Yeah but apparently Dana wants to fix what isn't broken.

This is obviously about money, if Goldie is on 20K a PPV he can probably be replaced by somebody who will take a fraction of that.

I've just seen Goldberg has started following One FC and Bellator on Twitter.

I think that pretty much sums up whose decision it was. I don't think it was Dana's decision either WME must have ordered it.

It's not necessarily Dana. Jim Rome is close friends with WME-IMG Co-President Mark Shapiro. One of the first things a new company does when they buy out another company, is try to use their own peoples to replace the old ones, whether for perceived efficacy, financial or political reasons. We'll see what happens. If WME-IMG promotes from within the UFC, then they just didn't like what Goldberg was doing, but if Rome gets it, then it feels like a frat boy hook up. Which is their prerogative now that they own the company.
