Ed Soares: Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva ‘makes the most sense for everyone’
Georges St-Pierre is just about back in the UFC, as the welterweight legend reportedly agreed to terms on a new contract. The imminent return of one of the UFC’s biggest draws and greatest ever fighters has led to speculation as to whom he’ll be facing in his first fight since October 2013. Oddsmakers have installed current UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping as the favorite to land a lucrative bout against the Canadian, but running second on that list is Anderson Silva.
GSP vs. Silva was the dream fight for many fans at a time when both men were dominant champions in their respective weight classes, but it never materialized. With Silva still active and coming off a win against Derek Brunson at UFC 208, and St-Pierre set to compete again, Legacy Fighting Alliance CEO told Bloody Elbow that he believes now is the time to make the fight happen.
“GSP vs. Anderson is something I feel makes the most sense for everyone,” Soares said. “Two of the greatest of all time fighting is good for the fans, the UFC, and for both athletes. This would make everyone a lot of money and it's a fight MMA fans all over the world would want to watch.”
Soares was Silva’s longtime manager before recently stopping his managerial duties to run LFA.
Of course, St-Pierre’s return has not officially been announced by the UFC, but all signs point to the deal being done. Should they finally book “Rush” against “The Spider” years after their respective primes ... better late than never, I suppose? Let’s put it this way, the UFC certainly didn’t strike while the iron was hot back in 2012.
Wow I actually agree with Ed Soares for once. The timing is finally right. Too bad it's not for a belt though. GSP is heavier nowadays I'm sure and Anderson could make 180 if not.
GSP v Silva - It's been the fight everyone wanted to see for years. However, we don't know where GSP is at and Anderson is out of his prime
GSP v Bisping - For the Middleweight belt. This has been teased for the last 6 months, both fighters have asked for it. However GSP skips the line for a title shot (not that Bisping gives a shit about that)
GSP v Woodley - This fight makes the most sense. However, if the UFC are bringing GSP back for financial reasons, this is the worst fight of the 3.
This is one of those fights we all want to see, but we all know in GSP's first fight back he's not gonna stand and bang with Silva. At this point in time this fight will still sell well but might be the most boring waste of both men's next fight IMO.
