Cyborg: Ronda Rousey fight won’t ever happen because ‘she knows what’s gonna happen’

Cyborg had a lot of set backs namely her own personal issues, however I'd like to see her claim her throne. She is the rightful ruler of the 145 division.

Invicta FC featherweight champion and UFC fighter Cris Cyborg received great news last week, as USADA granted her a retroactive TUE for Spironolactone, a banned substance she tested positive for in a December out-of-competition drug test. Cyborg received no suspension, which paves the way for her to resume competition and capture the UFC women’s featherweight belt, currently possessed by Germaine de Randamie.

A few days prior to the USADA announcement, Cyborg was on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, and she had plenty to say about Ronda Rousey. The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion returned to the Octagon at UFC 207, and was resoundingly beaten in just 47 seconds by Amanda Nunes. Cyborg questioned Rousey going for the title straightaway, as opposed to taking a non-title bout following her KO defeat vs. Holly Holm. (Transcription via MMA Fighting)

"I think she needed one fight, get a win and be confident again, and go for the belt,” Cyborg said. "I think it's hard to fight straight for the belt, somebody fights all year and she’s one year off. I really think if I’m managing someone, I don’t do like this. I’d give more fights for her, and she get confident again. Because after the Holly Holm fight, it broke her mind."

While Rousey’s future is uncertain, Cyborg is certain that chances of a superfight between the two — this was one of the top MMA fantasy fights at the height of Rousey’s reign of dominance — are now completely dashed.

"I think me and her fight is the biggest fight ever, but after she lost two fights… I really knew she cannot take a punch. I knew this, you know? And the fight is never gonna happen and never happened before because she knows what’s gonna happen. And a lot of people know what’s gonna happen. Same thing Amanda did, I’m gonna do worse. And everybody knows this, and this fight never happened."

You can be rest assured that Cyborg actually had complimentary things to say about Rousey and her importance to women’s MMA, and also remarked that she doesn’t really needed to continue her fighting career.

"She did a lot of good things, she opened the door for the division for the girls,” Cyborg said. "My coach said he could help train because, you know, it’s never gonna happen this fight. It doesn’t make me sad, you know? I think when you lose the fight it’s not the end of the world, you can keep training and catch up and try again better, you know? But she really don't need this. Make a lot of money, she can do other things for the sport too, just (outside) the cage."

It's true.

The WMMA Division can thank their lucky stars this fight never happened in Strikeforce, because theres a good chance WMMA would never of happened in the UFC if it did.

It's hard to tell. If Ronda would've got in a fight with Cyborg and lost they would've just built a 145 division to start. Most of the girls in SF were fighting at FW anyways. Ronda's first round finishes and being easier on the eyes than Cris helped but after the world saw how big of a killer Cyborg is, I think they would've been just as impressed if not more so.

Most hardcore fans already knew the fight was a mismatch. Rousey, as you say was pleasing on the eye and undefeated at the time. It would have been that much more difficult to market her as the once ever, mayweather beating, baddest woman on the planet, if Cyborg had already trashed her.

It might have happened eventually, I just dont think it would have happened as early as it did.

"Most hardcore fans already knew it was a mismatch". That's bollocks.

Fine then. "Anybody with eyes knew Amanda Nunes would always murder Ronda Rousey. Only casuals thought otherwise. Don't read into Nunes only two losses to make it to the UFC having a combined 30 seconds of cage time against Ronda Rousey. Nah, you're blind if you didn't think Nunes would win in the first round".

What you're doing Spite, is basically being a bragging DonRifle had he said "Jose Aldo wouldn't even last one punch against Conor McGregor".

So hardcore fans thought Rousey would win? So prior to joining the UFC, hardcore fans thought that Rousey with notable wins against Tate and Kaufmann would beat Cyborg, who was bigger, more experienced, competed against the best female kickboxer in the world, took bronze in ACDD tourney and won the IBJJF tourney twice, had recentlybeen popped for steriods and looked like a monster.

I never used to use the forums as much back then as I had mates at uni/work who were into UFC. From conversations with them, they all thought Cyborg would win.

I first saw WMMA in SF but it was Elite XC that got me knowing who most of the pioneer women fighters were. Cris was a star to me the second she beat Gina in SF. Had she fought and beat Ronda after that I don't see how they wouldn't have started a women's FW division after purchasing SF. That would've just been nuts to do anything but that is all I was getting at.

She was pushed hard, by just about everyone.

Anyone can fall victim to a hype machine, especially if you like the fighter. I honestly fought Hardy could upset GSP and I thought he'd beat Condit too. Maybe its partly because I never liked Rousey, but thats one hype train I was never aboard.

At that time I gave Cyborg the advantage at 145 and Ronda at 135.

Nobody knew the lengths of Ronda's shortcomings til it happened. I still kick myself til this day for not putting everything on the line for Holm as an 1800 underdog. Those margins are hard to come by. Amanda was still finding her way in the division. It was Carano, Cyborg, Tate, and then Ronda who were on the forefront of WMMA.

Straight up if Ronda gets in the Octagon with Cyborg she better not strike and if Edmond thinks she can after two knockouts against 135 pounders then there is no word to describe his mental ineptitude. Ronda would need to take it to the ground pure and simple. Also true that had that fight happened in Strikeforce we may not have seen WMMA in the UFC and we may not have seen the progression of the UFC and MMA in general to where it is now.

I think Holly Holm exposed the single biggest ***** in her armour. Her takedowns are not that hard to stop, if you train for them. Nunes took it a step further and proved that its easier just to keep away from the cage wall and push her away when she tries to clinch.

Rousey still beats the majority of woman in the division at this moment. But the likes of Nunes, Holm, Shevchenko GDR are out of her league now.

I'd love to see Tate v Rousey 3, I think it would be really competitive and I reckon Tate has improved enough to get the W this time round.

This MMA shit is really easy with hindsight.

Ronda is actually a great case study for how the mental aspect is possibly more important than the physical. Who's to say the 'invincible' version of Ronda didn't clinch and take down Cyborg in seconds and snap her arm?

At the top level, all of these girls can fight and the margins are small, Ronda trounced Misha Tate (x2), Sara McMann and Cat Zingano. We shouldn't forget that.

Whos to say she couldn't do that if they fought in 3 months. Nothings impossible, but I'd be as shocked at that outcomes as I would have been if it happened in 2012. Rousey didn't really get her baddest woman on the planet title until she discovered she actually had some nasty power in her punches... even if they did look like they were been thrown a drunk in a bar.

Well to be fair she did knockout Bethe and Alexis Davis with those punches that were thrown by a drunk in a bar. Which means that those two either have weak chins (doubt it by some of the fights they've been in) or Ronda actually has some power. And of course Sara McMann went down to a knee in the liver.

In other news Boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko says that Rocky Marciano will never fight him because he knows what's going to happen. Hey cyborg perhaps you didn't get the memo, Rhonda has all but quit forever. Secondly way to go kicking someone when they're down and out, like a bully picking on the easiest target.
