A clash between two of the UFC’s hardest hitting heavyweights is in the works.
New Zealand’s own Mark Hunt is being slated to headline a UFC fight night against Derrick Lewis on June 11. UFC Fight Night 110 takes place in Auckland, New Zealand at the Vector Arena.
MMA Junkie was the first to report the bout, and MMA Fighting confirmed through sources on Monday that the fight is being made.
Hunt (12-11-1-1), who is coming off of a third-round TKO loss against Alistair Overeem at UFC 209 earlier this month, will have to wait until April 19 for medical clearance due to a leg injury he endured during the fight. He turns 43 years old on Thursday.
The surging 32-year-old Lewis (18-4-1) is currently riding a six-fight winning streak. He is coming off a memorable come-from-behind knockout victory over Travis Browne in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 19. He also has victories over Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson during that stretch.
For Hunt it will be a return home. Born in South Auckland, the “Super Samoan” — who spend the first half of his career in PRIDE FC — has never fought a mixed martial arts contest in New Zealand.
No other bouts have been officially made for UFC Fight Night 110.
No way Hunt loses here. If he does that would be a big folly. His striking is so much crisper and technical. Lewis just wings his punches. I say Hunt by right uppercut as he wades in with his left shoulder high ready to roll and pawing with his left feigning a left hook counter.
