Eh....he really should have just been inducted for the Coleman fight like Pete Williams. Also Don Frye was the guy who demonstrated superior striking can work in the UFC.

To be fair he was one of the first original sprawl and brawlers, but this also opens the Hall of Fame up to fighters who have only one championship reign or none at all. Then again Stephen Bonnar opened it up probably more then Smith. Now the question is when will Frank Shamrock be inducted considering he accomplished alot more then Smith.

I like this, pioneers getting recognized. He was the first kick boxer to have proper success, and introduced new strategy to the game. He was the first guy to beat Coleman who looked unbeatable at the time (he KO'd Don Frye)

Maurice Smith is one of those guys that looks terrible if you consider his pre-UFC or overall record but his UFC run was actually quite HOF worthy.

First to beat Coleman, especially being a pure stand up fighter. Beat Tank who at the time was still relevant. Took prime Couture to a majority decision in losing his second title defence, and won his last UFC fight. Looking back it was still one of the one of the best HW title runs in the early UFC.

Yeah he demonstrated that sprawl and brawl was a viable fighting style in a time when wrestlers were dominating the MMA landscape. It's still very much utilized to the benefit of many fighters with Anderson Silva being one of the examples, though he utilized BJJ as well. Though in the greater scheme of things I agree his outside of UFC record was not all that spectacular.
