FORMER UFC heavyweight Tim Hague is fighting for his life after suffering a terrifying knockout loss in a boxing bout.

The 34-year-old was fighting in his native Canada on Friday night when he was knocked out by Adam Braidwood in the second round.

After being struck, he reportedly fell hard and his head bounced off the canvas — prompting immediate concern from medical officials in the arena.

After being evaluated, he was transported to a nearby hospital and required surgery to relieve pressure from brain bleeding.

Hague was a ten-year MMA veteran, with his last fight in July 2016, and boasted a 21-13 record in the format — including a 1-4 record in UFC, with his sole win coming against Pat Barry in 2009.

Hague’s friend, fellow fighter Cody Krahn, revealed the severity of the situation when he confirmed in a Facebook post that the 34-year-old was in a coma in hospital.

“As many of you know, Tim suffered a severe knockout in his boxing match last night,” Krahn posted.

“Once we got Tim backstage and with the doctor we could tell he needed to go to the hospital.

“Tim is currently in a coma.

“He had to have surgery to relive (sic) the pressure from his brain bleeding. But because we’re not family, they weren’t able to tell us much more.”

Hague made the switch to boxing 12 months ago after suffering a 33-second knockout loss in his final MMA appearance, and had compiled a 1-2 record in boxing.

Awful news.

Looking at his MMA record, he's been KO/TKOd 4 times in the past 2 years. He lost a boxing bout by TKO in 2016. That is a hell of a lot of losses by stoppage and possibly several concussions in the space of 2 years. Then the KO the other night where his head bounced off the canvas... I'm not surprised it took its toll.

Terrible situation for his family and friends, and with that video to act as a haunting reminder of what killed him :(

Braidwood had beaten guys with 8-0, 3-0 records etc, his fight before Hague was beating a guy with a 11-6 record, he shouldn't have been put in with a 1-2 boxer with a history of KO/TKO losses. Shame the promotion seemingly failed to look into their fighters full competition history.

Tim was a late replacement, I think. Its the only way this makes sense. They would have never scheduled this fight under normal circumstances. They were probably scraping the bottom of the barrel, looking for somebody whos willing to step in with a few days notice, and Tim was the only taker. Poor sod. :(

So hindsight is 20/20 right, there wasn't any horrendous points where it was clear this fight should be stopped. Everyone is watching this knowing what happened and screaming about the ref and the corner. Well, it didn't appear at any point leading up to the KO that he was completely done, it looked like a boxer out of his depth who had been stunned and hurt. The only moment where I say it probably could have been stopped is when he shot for a takedown at the end of the first, but even then I don't know if I'd be saying that without knowing the eventual outcome.

Obviously this is horrible and sad, but attacking his opponent for celebrating is plain wrong. Should the ref have stopped it, yes probably, should have seen that it wasn't going to get any better and stopped it, but at a small boxing show like this refs generally allow fights to go longer than they should because often times fighters are outmatched. As far as a 1-2 fighter fighting an undefeated fighter, it's commonplace in boxing, you don't get noticed until you're 14-0 with 14 knockouts, so guys get fed fighters tailor made for them all the time.

As far as the corner goes, they probably should have throw in the towel as soon as he was knocked down again in the second, but we don't know what he was like between rounds or if he was telling them not to stop it. I am critical of corners quite a bit for not protecting fighters from themselves but the reality is those guys in the corner could be his students or employees, often times guys run their own gyms don't have someone who coaches them, it's just guys from the school who aren't going to go against the fighter. I'm sure the corner feels horrible enough, they don't need people telling them what they should have done.

Finally, I'd say this is more a symptom of the fight game then it is this particular fight. The manw as 1-2 in boxing, fighting in boxing after being KOd twice last year in mma. It's obvious he needed money and was going to go in and take a beating to make some, I've seen it happen a lot. Whether it was standing 8 counts or his previous KOs or a freak accident or whatever ultimately is to blame, I think this falls on the atmosphere of the fight world more than anything particular to this fight.

Side note, did anyone notice the knock down a little after 2 minutes started due to a headbutt?

2nd side note: I'd be willing to bet the majority of the damage form this KO came from his head whipping into the mat after he was KOd. The vast majority of times something like this happens in a streetfight it's because the whip from going down and hitting your head on the ground is far more severe than any punch. None of the knock downs early were super significant, the last punch was hard, but even then we've seen plenty of guys hit much harder. I've felt like something needs to be done about that factor, all the worst reactions to KOs we've seen are from the guy smashing his head on the mat after the KO(think Uriah Hall spin kicking that guy on TUF) but there really isn't anything that can be done.

Am I the only one that thinks this ref. should be fired? This was an easy TKO decision.

Should have been stopped in the middle of the first. Nothing intelligent about his defense. Never should have gone into the 2nd. Easily should have been stopped after the first knockdown in the 2nd and even when he was just looking at ground trying to avoid punches.

...Well, it didn't appear at any point leading up to the KO that he was completely done....
I don't think you have to look done, just incompetent. There was nothing about this guy that showed he was capable of protecting himself and he had several knockdowns to prove it.
