Hmmm Alves vs Hughes would be very interesting...
New school vs old school.
Striker vs Wrestler.
I like it. I like it a lot. I know most of you probably think Hughes will just wipe the floor with Alves, which is very possible, but I think it could be exciting!(more exciting than Serra vs Hughes imo)
I'd pick Alves over Hughes. I'd even go as far as to say it's more likely Alves would dominate Hughes if he came in with the right gameplan expecting the takedowns. If he can avoid the takedowns the the fight is all Alves. If Fitch ever fights Hughes I'd say the same thing. Hughes and Chuck dominated for a long time, but now people know what to expect and have learned how they work.
If Alves is put in there and it is for the #1 Contendership or vacated title, I will refuse to watch that fight. Alves does not deserve a shot at anything this huge at all. He got owned by Lytle, he won because of some cuts, Lytle dominated that whole fight and he basically hasn't fought anyone else worthy.
If this fight takes place, it's all just to make Hughes look good and maintain that #1 status he has and nothing more.
I honestly don't see a reason why GSP can't take this fight.
I think you are probably right about Alve not deserving a #1 contender fight yet, but I wouldn't say he was getting dominated by lytle. Chris looked agressive cause he was swinging for the fences, but those leg kicks were Effin brutal! I'm not sure what round 3 would look like if Alves was able to continue taking his base away like that. It was shaping up to be an awsome fight, and I'm really liking the new chris Lytle
Too bad that Karo has a broken hand, or else he could be fighting for the title. Alves vs Hughes would be interesting, and Alves has a good shot at beating Hughes, since his stand-up is much better.
i think fitch would be a good match for hughes. we could see if hes ready for the big time and we could also see if hughes can keep up with the young bloods.
i would like to see diego sanchez fight hughes, not because he deserves it or anything, but because sanchez is so intense.
finch's wrestling is extremely impressive, and his sub defense is even more impressive. he must have defended at least 15-20 sub attempts by diego. he is a huge WW and it is very hard to control his body and physically overpower him. that is why hughes would have a very hard time with him. fitch beats hughes 8/10 IMO.

You make some good points. Fitch will have to be careful of a flash sub, a la Hughes-GSP I, but he is bigger and at least as strong as Hughes is.
Much of Hughes' success has come from being able to overpower his opponents. With Fitch, as with GSP, that won't be so easy.
Amazing, the rate of development at which MMA is moving, when we're already calling Hughes "old-school."
