Comparing Pride situations with the UFC doesn't work because Pride made a lot of decision that made no sense so it doesn't really work.
While the fight got canceled is that a fair reason to take some luster away from Serra's title. I mean having two champs takes a lot away from Serra's title.
Also before the Sherk situation it was set that BJ would fight Sherk and it took them 3 months a a number of pushbacks to finally make it a interm title fight.
Lastly did Serra do any less than Hughes or GSP to earn there title shots. I mean they both lost Hughes beat the same guy as Serra, GSP beat Kos by decision. Say what you will about TUF 4 (and I have a lot of bad things to say) He earned his title shot more than GSP and Hughes did thiers.
But I thank u Split for giving me the opposite view.
True for Pride and UFC, Pride do make weird decisions sometimes(Zulu vs Fedor.. lol).
But i just wanted to show an example of how an interim champion cannot be as bad, as long as they fight each other next.
Also, i don't think it takes any of the worth of Serra's title, and if it does, it's because there is some questions on how he got it in the first place, which is the case in my opinion(i think yours as well).
Again, look at the Fedor situation. If there was a questionnable champion between Nog and Fedor, it had to be Nogueira!
as for Sherk, i guess your right then, i didnt have the full details on what happened. But again, i think everything comes down to "did he earn that title" in why they wasnt any delay for the title fight, and also Serra's popularity.
I do agree popularity sucks when it's added to who should fight who and who should get a title shot, but unfortunately ratings is the dominant argument when it comes down to the UFC(Pride as well,if not more).
Now to the main problem i think, did he really earn it? I think not. Here's why, and also comparison to GSP, Hughes.
Serra : Who did he beat? Chris Lytle, who's still struggling to find his way into the ppv event, and GSP. Any other wins were on 155 unknowns(except Yves Edwards), or on some fighters nobody remembers(except Shonie Carter and its for the wrong reasons).
Who did he lose to? Karo,Din Thomas, BJ penn. all great fighters, but when you look at the other contenders..
Hughes : His record is too long to list, but he did beat BJ penn in his revenge match. lately he hasn't been impressive, and i personally think his style doesn't work in the UFC today. his standup is too horrible to work against real contenders. But nonetheless, his dominance for the last 5 years should earn him respect and a title shot. For the record, he has also beat Chris Lytle
GSP : Sean Sherk,BJ penn, Matt Hughes, KOS. But unlike both fighters above, he's all fought top fighters(top fighters at the same time of the fight), and has lost only to Hughes.
So in the end, it might be off topic a little, but i dont think Serra deserved a shot, and his title win is worth half of what it would be if he would of worked his way up.
