Interim title whats the point?

Why even call it a interim title. So the winner's hold a fake belt until they fight the real title holder. I can see it if the champ leaves but just an injury. Or like when tito just plain out wanted more money and you didnt know if he would fight ever. I just think it is a waste of time just call it a fight for a title shot. Cause in the long run thats all it really is.

Presumably interim championship matches will be 5-round fights?

That makes a difference.

It's an easy explanation to let the fans see the fights they want to see if the champ is out.

its basically a temporary champ and no1 contender i think its good if a champ is injured for a long period of time.

That's what I was thinking. Dana/ Fertitta Bros/ joe Silva probably wanted a 5 round fight to take place to give the fans their moneys worth.

If this was a no.1 contender bout, then no one else would be able to fight the winner. It effectively puts GSP or Hughes out for as long as Serra is down; and if your champ and no.1 contender aren't fighting, the whole division is on hold.

If however you make it an interim title, then the winner of this can then move forward and defend said interim title, allowing guys like Fitch and Karo to move forward. When Serra returns, he will fight whoever is holding the interim belt, and depending on how long he is down for, that could be anyone. You cannot advance the division without having a title that can be defended. This way everything rolls forward, and Serra is basically anointed an automatic shot at the unified belt when he returns.

Everyone wins but Serra who will have an heir apparent (which is merely a vanity issue), but at least he doesn't lose anything because he retains the title as champ.

Demian Maia may be the Fred Astaire of jiu-jitsu, but it’s too bad Silva is the Gene Kelly of kicking everyone’s ass.

imo theres no point in an interim belt at a certain point the fighter's belt should just be taken away if he cant fight for a long period of time

Yea i think if someone cant fight for a long time then they should loose the best and get an automatic shot at it once they heal....
