Yeah saying 9 times champion sounds nice. But by that mentality is Anderson Silva a 3 times champion? Its weird that only Hughes gets called that was by winning or defending the tile. Not taking away anything from Matt Hughes I have a huge amount of respect for what eh accomplished. I'm just criticizing the UFC and people calling him that.

The Gracie was a catch weight fight (175 lbs) and was not for the Title.

each time you defend your belt counts as a championship. I think the fighters get their own belt every time the successfully defend or gain the belt.

remember when BJ walked out with the his belt on when he fought GSP?

hughes is not a 9-time champion, he is a 2-time champion with 9 title defenses.

you do not count title defenses when determining how many times a person is champion. saying otherwise makes you look foolish. this has been established for centuries, regaining a belt or winning it for the first time is whats being counted.

If Matt Hughes were a 9 times champion, and is currently not champ, that would mean he has lost the title 9 times. I don't see 9 loss on his MMA record. So what, was he stripped of the title each time? Someone new to MMA could think that.
