Shogun-Tito @ UFC 83?

Quote:
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will return at UFC 83. Who he will fight is yet to be revealed, but we'll try to shed some light on the subject.

At Cage Rage 24, Murilo "Ninja" Rua defeated Xavier Foupa-Pokam to move to an impressive 3-0 in Cage Rage events. In his corner was his younger brother, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, who has made a huge impact on the entire sport of MMA. After the event, Shogun revealed to the press and to fans that he would be returning to the Octogan at UFC 83. No opponent has been named.

Shogun's next fight will either make him or break him. Chuck Liddell lost two in a row recently, and he's been dropped out of the title picture for awhile (he's dropped to the number 8 Light Heavyweight in the world according to our rankings). Mirko Cro Cop lost two in a row, and he's completely out of the title picture. Shogun had a ton of build up for his UFC debut, and fans were sent home wondering what had happened to him. But if Shogun losses his second fight, then people will really start to question his spot in the top 5 Light Heavyweights.

Although an opponent hasn't been named, according to Shogun's management there is a strong possibility of him fighting Tito Ortiz. Although this is currently just a name being thrown around, rumors often come true. This fight would get a ridiculous amount of ppv buys, and it would boost either fighter's status a great amount. If this fight does happen, I'd bet that Big Bear and Chute Boxe would be constantly in session. This actually would be a really good opportunity for Tito Ortiz to get back in the discussion for a title fight. If he defeated Shogun and then won his next fight or two, then he would have to be considered for a title shot. Either way, I think that Shogun would be too much for Tito to handle and that Shogun would put himself back in the title picture.

Looks like just a rumor at this point, but what are your thoughts on this match up? I think the striking game would be pretty equal, with Shogun having the better clinch and muay thai, and Tito having the better boxing. As far as the ground goes, I definitely can see Tito taking Shogun down and GnPing his way to a decision or a submission. Thoughts?

This is my first and probably only post... but i gotta comment this.

You are giving the overall advantage to Tito? And striking wise equal?

Everyone knows I'm a Shogun fan, but I think its a bad matchup. He'll have to get Tito rocked or Sub him to win. I think he'll be on his back too much to win a decision.

I'm not giving an advantage to Tito, but I think he's a bad match up stylistically for Shogun. Think about it, he has better top control and take downs than Forrest, and look what Forrest did to Shogun. Also, if you watch Tito Liddell 2 it's pretty evident that Tito has the more technical, crisp boxing. I would say Shogun has a better overall striking game, and Tito has better boxing.

Yup, I agree. You can't win a decision if you're on your back the whole time!

Ortiz may have better boxing but overall, I think Shogun would out strike with his Muay thai and he has a better ground game. Shogun has the advantage imo.

I don't know about that. Tito has never been able to take someone down who pushes him backwards during the fight, and that's exactly what Shogun will do. I see Shogun coming forward through whatever strikes Tito offers, getting him up near the cage, and raining punches and knees while Tito does his cover up thing until something slips through and puts him down.

Ortiz will just take Shogun down and pound him out for the decision. Ortiz has excellent top positioning, has better stand-up, and better wrestling. Also, Ortiz has excellent sub defense.

Tito says he is going to be fighting around Cinco De Mayo so unless the card is in late April I don't see the fight happening but I don't know if they want Tito to beat Shogun anyways right now because Rampage wants to fight him and they should give Shogun Alexander or Bonnar so he can get a win then since he has a big name give Rampage his fight.

Here's the link that Tito says he is fighting in May. http://www.mmaforum.com/ufc-discussi...ng-return.html
