Yes Hughes was in trouble in the 2nd but I think Penn is just trying to justify why he lost. I am not trying to hate on Penn at all, I thought he fought a great fight but I don't really think there is anything wrong with his ribs, his face and head is a different story.
fighters cant just make up injuries as an excuse...hes obviously been through x rays...

and what about matt's "poke in the eye"... mabe u should watch the replay a couple times

Ok, I am not denying that the poke in the eye was as bad as Hughes made it seem but that was strategy. Had Hughes lost the fight I doubt he would have come back and say "well the poke in the eye distorted my vision so I couldn't see him coming at me". Penn is saying that is one of the reasons he lost, and have you seen any medical reports on any x-rays, all you're going on is what Penn himself said. I am not saying it isn't possible but I just don't think it is that likely. I think it is an excuse but like I said, just my opinion.

So we need medical proof that his ribs hurt? He seemed gassed in round 3 and messed up ribs makes it hard to breathe.

I'm willing to take BJ at his word if he says he was injured then thats good enough for me. Good interview, BJ sounds like a stand up guy to me, I hope they fight again. Hughes hung in there and earned the victory just like BJ said, the "what if" scenarios don't hold alot of water with me.

i believe it...what else would explain bj's drastic drop in performance and activity? lack of cardio? sure, most likely due to his injury...of course we will never know for sure, but ones things for sure; he gave hughes way more credit than due so give the guy the benefit of the doubt...

I have all the respect in the world for BJ after reading this interview. I dont think he made up the rib thing.

Sounds about right for why he died in the third. Wouldn't have to be a rib fracture, could have easily been a severly strained intercostal muscle that wouldn't show up on x-ray.
Kudos to Penn for a classy interview.
