Guillard: #1 Contender
Melvin Guillard is making his presence known in the Lightweight division and with the poor performance of Jens Pulver, I think that he should fight the winner of Sherk/Florian as the #1 contender for the Lightweight title.
At the finale of TUF 2 Guillard TKO'd Marcus "The Irish Hand Grenade" Davis as a Welterweight. In his next welterweight bout Guillard lost to Josh Neer by submission.
Guillard then dropped down to Lightweight, where he fought unorthodox fighter Rick Davis and KO'd him at 1:37 in the first round with a huge, quick punch.
At UFC 63 Guillard squared off with Gabe Ruediger and TKO'd him with a punch to the body. (Yes, he ended the fight with a body shot)
Guillard is currently training with Team Punishment and was cornered by Tito Ortiz at UFC 63, which means he is going to keep improving.
Though Guillard is only 23, he has an incredible MMA record of 38-6-0.

yeah melvin is a very good contender for the lightweight belt he shouldn't have lost to josh neer he just wasn't cautious enough and got caught in a stupid submission melvin was beating him bad the rest of the fight so i think melvin should get a title shot maybe the next one or the one after that but he is defnitly high ranked in the lw division, he could take florian i bet

Since Jens Pulver lost, Melvin Guillard just needs to beat Josh Neer in a rematch then he will definitely be next in line. Then Tyson Griffin, Joe Lauzon, and if BJ drops down weight he can.

I honetly see Melvin very possibly being the most feared LW in the UFC. I bet he'll beat Sherk. He's got good takedown defence and he's an amazing striker. He'll KO sherk in the 2nd round.

maybe but sherk is in my knowlege stronger and just as agressive with better wrestling, he will have a disadvantage if he stands he has short arms and melvin is a great striker but i think sherk could win and so can melvin it's a toss up to me, i would prefer sherk win though

I say, put him up against an experienced fughter fiirst (Penn, Edwards, Stout, Pulver, etc.). The guy has the talent but anyone that outlast that first flurry has a great shot at winning against him. He needs the patience and knowledge of a good coach. He seems to be getting it with team punishment. He looked a lot better this tie out, but not ready to be a champion.
He is by far my favorite LW though. He is a Louisiana boy like me though.

 Funny how a guy gets so much recognition for beating no one that he can instantly beat the best in the league in the second round.
Guillard at this point in his career would stand no chance against Sherk. Guillard has shown his ground game isnt all that great and almost got submitted by a fatigued below average fighter in his last fight.
Sherk would easily take Melvin to the ground and initiate a ground and pound or work in a submission and expose Melvin for his subpar ground game.
Sherk isnt stupid enough to stand with Melvin only because of the reach advantage, Melvin comes out swinging and Sherk can easily take him down.
There is no need to start saying Melvin can easily beat the best in the business because of 2 fights against below average fighters. That's disrespectful to Sherk. |

Now that Guillard's training with team Punishment you can expect to see alot of improvement in his ground game, especially his takedown defense.
Granted, Sherk would probably pound Guillard through the canvas right now, but in 6 months that could change alot.
I think that Guillard can outstrike anyone in the UFC Lightweight division, and I think he'd probably take Florian to a decision.
